The Evergreen State College (Japanese Language)
I find tutoring a fun and satisfying experience. I've got 40+ hours helping students in elementary, middle, and high school learn reading, writing, and English through the King County Library System's Study Zone program. It's fascinating to see how different people think and I enjoy figuring out how to help each individual learn according to their own personal strengths. I do this while keeping the environment casual and fun.
My college degree is in Japanese language from The Evergreen State College. In my final year, I did a foreign exchange to Kobe and learned all about a foreign culture, first hand! I know what it feels like to be in an unfamiliar place, with a need to communicate with the people around me. Even without full fluency in the foreign language. If you're an ESL student, I know what you're going through...and I can help.
I also bring business and professional writing experience to the table. I worked as a manager for a major corporation, but I'm much more suited to helping people learn and achieve their goals. I still work as a freelance copywriter, which might not mean what you think. It has nothing to do with copyright law. Copywriting is a specific style of persuasive writing for advertising and marketing. It's not what you typically learn in high school or college English classes, but it's useful nonetheless.
I work part time for the King County Library system, so my schedule is flexible. I do have a 4-hour cancellation policy, just to keep things fair for everybody. I'm dedicated to punctuality and will respect your time as well. I typically prefer to meet students at the library for sessions.

Christopher helped me a lot to improve my English skills while I stayed in Seattle. He is very flexible and customized the English class for me, so it was perfectly suited to my demand. For example, he gave me a lot of useful English phrases for business and personal use. We also studied biology in English by reading Nature magazines and other materials. I really enjoyed studying English with him, and recommend his class to anyone who is trying to improve their English as a 2nd language.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
In the King County Library System's Study Zone tutoring program I've logged over 40 hours of working with elementary school kids.
I worked extensively with a 4th grade Korean boy on his English reading and writing. He would read a book or story aloud and I would help him understand any unfamiliar vocabulary with real-world examples. I would also work with him on proper pronunciation.
When he needed to answer questions I would direct him to look at the text and find the correct passages. This developed his reading comprehension.
To improve his writing, I guided him in the creation of stories. We would brainstorm ideas and come up with a logical sequence of events.
