About Lori

Does your child need help learning English? Does your child struggle with reading?

I am an experienced tutor who has taught privately for the past 4 years. Before that, I worked in the Lake Washington School District teaching small groups of K-5th grade students English as a second language. Our program was recognized by the State of Washington for excellence in English Language Learning. My literacy training includes hands on experience from the founder of Leap To Literacy, a highly effective reading program used in schools throughout British Columbia. My hands on experience, combined with my Speech and Language Pathology degree, have provided a strong foundation to help children with varying needs, levels and cultural backgrounds.

I believe in providing a fun atmosphere with clear structure and goals. I will provide a customized approach to help your child learn and succeed. This may include games, songs and poetry. Each child is different. I will do my best to help your child gain confidence, discover a love of learning and succeed.

I look forward to talking with you and answering any questions you may have!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have worked as an instructional assistant in the public school system for over ten years in elementary education. I have used the following reading programs: Read Well, Phonics for Reading, Explode the Code, Read Naturally, Pockets and Wonders. For writing, I have run small groups using the Step up to Writing method. I spent 2 years assisting during 2nd and 3rd grade math block. I ran small groups using Envision Math which is the current curriculum used by The Lake Washington School District. I love learning and continue to research and learn the latest methods and standards. I feel this experience and love of learning combined with my private tutoring has provided a solid foundation of skills and knowledge to help any K-6 aged student.

ESL/ESOL

I have worked for over six years in the public school system teaching ELL to small groups of children ages 5-12. I helped to run the Kindergarten ELL program at my school. I was responsible for testing, goal setting and tracking over 30 children. The past three years I have been tutoring several ELL students privately and through Wyzant. My training includes a practicum and degree in Speech and Language Pathology.

Phonics

My degree is in Speech Pathology and Audiology with a minor in child psychology. I have worked in the public school setting for over 10 years (grades k-8) and have tutored privately for 3. I use Phonics for Reading, Explode the code and Leap to Literacy, which is a phonics based program. These methods are systematic and fun, as I include poetry and chanting to help solidify learning.

Reading

Trained in Leap to Literacy program, ran reading groups, over 5 years experience working in Kindergarten classroom.
