About Evan

Who am I, and why on earth would you let me tutor you?

I'm a recent college graduate currently working as a software engineer and finding myself missing the golden days of learning and teaching. I've decided that I would enjoy some tutoring on the side, simply to help others learn and to keep me on my toes in fascinating subjects.

Through my high school and college days I've been a strong student. I scored 1550 on the '1600 max' SAT, 33 on the ACT, and all 5's in AP Music Theory, Computer Science, Physics B and Physics C. I also aced the math portion of the GRE with an 800 -- alas, a 630 on the verbal portion, but I hope to improve on that soon. In short, I love to learn, and I love to see others become excited through learning.

I realize that my rates are fairly high, but I set them at this rate to allow me to drive to each of my assignments.

More importantly, even though I charge a rate, I'm simply not interested in tutoring for the money: I work full time at a job that pays better. I wanted to try tutoring because I love to learn and love to teach. I honestly feel that the world is jam packed with wild frontiers of discovery, and that the constant improvement and exploration of science, math, literature, and music is one of the greatest joys possible in this life.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

Any approach to Bible Studies is bound to be a very personal and possibly controversial issue, but without delving into these important areas, here is why I feel I would make a good Bible Studies tutor:

I took several semesters of biblical classes during my university studies, which included (among other approaches) a basic review of scholarly approaches to the Bible: history of translations, important manuscripts, basic use of Strongs and other resources, current uses of textual criticisms, etc. Before then, I attended a daily before-school seminary during High School, and served as a missionary overseas for two years. I have read completely through the Bible twice in English, and completely through the New Testament once more in Luther's German translation.

Most people interested in Bible Studies have personal views on correct interpretation of texts. I'm familiar with many of the "proof texts" of several Christian variations (predestination, Trinitarianism, etc) but would not feel comfortable tutoring towards a particular interpretation.

C#

I recently graduated from college with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science, and am currently working for Microsoft in an environment where C# is the primary coding language. I use C# most days that I work, and am familiar with all the basic differences between it and other languages.

C++

I have recently graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. While earning my degree, I took many classes which required me to complete large programming classes in C++, including several advanced C++ concepts including inheritance, polymorphism, and other design patterns. I've developed code in C++ using a variety of environments, IDE's , and operating systems.

Composition (Music)

In college, while earning my Bachelor's degree, I completed a major in Music, specializing in Music Composition. I've taken several semesters of composition training as well as theory, counterpoint, and form. I've had several compositions of my own performed by students and professional performers.

Computer Programming

I have recently graduated from Brigham Young University with a Bachelor of Science degree in Computer Science. This means that for most of my studies I was constantly involved in computer programming projects, including a variety of languages, problems, applications, and situations.

Aside from that, I am currently working as a software testing engineer for Microsoft, and am thus a professional programmer.

Computer Science

My Bachelor's Degree is in Computer Science. I've taken several semesters of classes covering a broad range of Computer Science concepts including Theory, Natural Language Processing, Languages, Databases, Project Management, Internet Programming, Algorithms, etc.

Ear Training

While working on my Bachelor's degree, I completed a major in Music with an emphasis in Music Composition. This included four semesters of musical dictation training (ear training).

Logic

While studying computer science in college, I studied formal logic both as a mathematical tool (first-order logic and symbolic logic) and a rhetorical idea (in my "Introduction to Logic" philosophy class).

I'm familiar with the most important logical laws (Law of Identity, Law of non-contradiction, etc), constructs (Modus tollens, modus ponens, etc), and fallacies (Post hoc, strawman, non sequitor, etc). I'm also a great fan of logic puzzles, especially the works of Raymond Smullyan.

Piano

I have played the piano for 18 years, including studying piano performance at the university level for several years.

Sight Singing

While working on my Bachelor's degree, I completed a major in Music specializing in Music Composition. This included four semesters of sight singing training.

Before this time, I passed the AP music test (which included sight singing) with a perfect score.

Fun Learning

Both my boys enjoyed the sessions with Evan. He made learning fun so that the hour passed by fast. They even looked forward to the next lesson. Thanks, Evan!
