About Sarah

I am an attorney who recently moved to this area with my husband, who is in the Navy. I love to read and hope to open a literacy center one day. I have spent years tutoring people of all ages in reading and math. I love to explain things and to instill my passion for reading in others.

My tutoring experience is primarily with students in first through third grade who are struggling to read at their expected grade level with a program called Schools of Hope with United Way.

I have had success with these students by being consistent and patient. When tutoring, I use a phonetic approach to practice words combined with the student reading aloud from a book of their choosing from an appropriate level of difficulty. I also read a book to the student while they follow along. This process builds confidence in reading ability and in the tutoring relationship.

I also have experience tutoring middle and high school students in reading and math. For math in particular, repetition and practice are the key. I work with students to explain a mathematical process then we practice that process over and over with diminishing degrees of assistance. This process also builds confidence over time.

With my background, I am an expert at studying. I can help students determine what study method works best for them and develop a habit in that method that can aid their studying throughout any education level.

I am happy to meet where you are most comfortable. Please contact me to schedule a lesson at your convenience. I look forward to working with you.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Public Speaking

I am an attorney who had practiced a a litigator for nearly five years. I have attended many public speaking seminars and have extensive experience making public presentations in courtrooms and to colleagues. In addition, my undergraduate degree is in Communications, which involved a great deal of public speaking activity and analysis.
