About James

My interest in chemistry started in my college preparatory school where after completing the typical high school chemistry class I also took the AP chemistry course. This gave me a head start in college enabling me to do a summer research project for my organic chemistry professor. I also was able to work as a teaching assistant for an advanced laboratory class as I had taken the class a year ahead of other students. In graduate school I taught undergraduate laboratory classes for a year prior to focusing on my thesis research. After graduate school I worked 27 years for the Dow Chemical Company as a research chemist. During that time I hired, trained, and worked with a number of technologists which gave me experience "teaching" younger people how to conduct scientific studies. I continued my career at the Michigan Molecular Institute where I mentored younger researchers on how to do good science.

I recently moved to the Poulsbo, WA area and am interested in tutoring students in chemistry and organic chemistry. Although I don't have formal "teaching" or "tutoring" experience, I believe my experiences as a research chemist for over 32 years would make me a valuable asset to someone looking for tutoring in the area of chemistry.

My qualifications in chemistry and organic chemistry are based on my education (BA in Chemistry, PhD in Organic Chemistry) and my career experiences (27 years at the Dow Chemical Company and 5 years at Michigan Molecular Institute). My LinkedIn profile has more details on my areas of expertise. I have over 20 issued US patents and many international patents. The Dow Chemical Company received a US National Medal of Technology in 2002 based in part on my efforts in inventing and developing SiLK Semiconductor Dielectrics.

If you believe I can be of assistance to you as a tutor or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I'm very open and flexible in timing and scheduling sessions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
