Western Governor's University (Education)
I have been in banking and finance for 15 yrs. I presented banking information to various ages of students ranging from kindergarten to high school. What I did was to communicate with the students on their level and tied in information that was pertinent to them and related that to the information that I was discussing. For example, I would ask questions and relate it back to things that the students were interested in like the X-Box, or movies or whatever is important to the students. In addition, I would try and tell stories and share examples to encourage engagement of the students into the lesson.
I am currently working as a substitute teacher for the school district here. I work to follow the host teacher's instructions of what they want to be completed. I do this by working to gain the trust and agreement of the students. How I did this was to use my many years in finance and travel to share stories that I can relate to the task at hand. Many of the students like the stories and it gives me something to gain acceptance by the students for doing their work and they feel like they are receiving a treat. I strongly believe that learning needs to be fun and create an interest in the students. If the students are not interested in learning than it is a lost cause. As a teacher or instructor you need to answer the unstated question of the students which is, "Why should I put forth much effort in learning this information?" I strive to answer these questions, frequently. I have been told by many students that I am their favorite substitute teacher. I feel that is because I am constantly looking for things that the students would be able interested in and that they can relate to. Finally, I have traveled extensively throughout Western Europe and would be able to bring a worldwide view to history and other subjects. I have been in banking and finance for 15 yrs. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was interested in World War II history and World War I when I was in 6th Grade. I have always looked at it from the standpoint of how did that affect American life. Additionally, I have had grandfathers that fought in WWII and while they were alive, I would ask them questions about their experiences. It is extremely interesting to see how the different major impacts on history and how that affects the United States.
I have worked in the banking and financial world for over 10 years. In addition, I have an Associates Degree in International Business.
My Bachelor's degree is for students 5th Grade and up. I have elementary grade subbing experience.
My philosophy of teaching younger students is to make it fun, but learning is still involved.
I am currently working in three different school districts and all of the last eight days, I have substituted for either elementary math teachers or middle school math and SPED or resource teachers.
I have a CELTA certificate from the University of Cambridge to teach English to English Language Learners.
I have visited many historical sites in Europe, like Omaha Beach, the Palace of Versailles, London Bridge and the Tower of Pisa. After having visited these places, I felt that I gained a deeper understanding of the historical significance of these places. For example, when I was walking along Omaha Beach, I saw the concrete bunkers and I tried to imagine what it was like for the U.S. soldier to try and land on the beach all under German machine gun fire.
I completed my student teaching to complete my Bachelor's Degree at a alternative high school where I taught a class of seniors on American Government for weeks. This included writing lesson plans, gathering resources and giving the lessons.
I worked in banking and finance and I used Excel to track my sales, loans, and referrals. I did this to make sure that my sales credit was received. I created many Word documents to communicate with my clients about different investment or banking products that were available to them.
I graduated from WGU and one of the requirements for most of my classes, was that I was required to create Powerpoint presentations. I did a Powerpoint for an English literature class, for a Science class and even one showing how to complete a math problem. I would use many of the tools to allow the Powerpoint to come alive and be visually appealing.
I worked in banking and finance and I used Word to communicate with my banking and investment clients. I created many different Word documents to communicate with my clients about different investment or banking products that were available to them or procedural issues that were changing.
While substituting, I helped students with IEP's study and provided them with some basic study skills.
I use empathy to understand the problems that the students' are having. I look for alternative solutions to their issues. In addition, I enable them to figure out the questions that they have. This boosts their self-esteem and empowers them to complete their homework.
I have always been intensely interested in World War II history since I was in 5th Grade. That has evolved into interest in world history. When I was younger, I would read about a specific subject in the encyclopedia until I was tired and than go to bed.
