About Lance

Success in life is important to everyone and education is an integral part of that. I really want to help people succeed in life through taking charge of their education and thus be able to pursue their dreams. I too have struggled through many classes, but I worked hard, got help where I needed to, and succeeded. I can help you do the same.

My personal approach to tutoring is to teach to the student's individual needs. I am a pre-med student and within the healthcare world I see the need for each patient to be given their own tailored therapy, not just a generic approach. And I believe that tutoring is very much the same. If they need continual guidance or simply occasional instruction, I can modify my tutoring to meet their needs. My relationship with the student is very important and I want them to see me as a friend in addition to me being their mentor, while of course maintaining professionalism.

I have experience tutoring in Math and Materials Science, but because of the variety of classes I have taken, I am also experienced in many other subjects. As I am currently employed as a research assistant, I also have in depth experience in many areas within science such as molecular biology, immunology, biotechnology, and chemical thermodynamics. It is my goal to always strive to be the best friend and mentor possible within every situation. And because of this, I have had many successful tutoring opportunities whether it be in my employment as a research/teaching assistant, with my peers in the classes I take, or within my family helping my siblings with their homework.

As a senior in the chemical engineering program at Brigham Young University, I have taken upper level university courses in math, engineering, chemistry, and biology. My current GPA is 3.88 which is in the 90th percentile of the engineering college within the university. I have also been accepted into various honor societies such as the Tau Beta Pi Engineering Honor Society and the Golden Key International Honour Society. I have participated in several clubs including BYU's Biomedical Engineering Club, BYU's local chapter of the Society of Biological Engineers, and the American Institute of Chemical Engineering. I also plan to attend medical school after graduating from BYU and specialize in oncology.

In addition to my background mentioned above, I am also a husband, a father, and a faithful church member. I love being outdoors hiking, rock climbing, fishing, and target shooting. My favorite past time however, is being with my family and going on runs or bike rides with my wife and son. Please feel free to contact me even with quick questions.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT Math

I scored a 33 in the Math section of the ACT and excelled in math in high school. Since then I have taken university level Calc 1 & 2, differential equations, linear algebra, and multivariable calculus.

Algebra 1

I scored a 33 in the Math section of the ACT and excelled in math in high school. Since then I have taken university level Calc 1 & 2, differential equations, linear algebra, and multivariable calculus and have maintained a 3.88/4.0 GPA in these classes. I use algebra daily in my chemical engineering classes.

Biology

In pursuing my degree, I have taken 19.5 credits of different biology classes and have maintained a GPA of 4.0 out of 4.0 in these classes. In addition to my education, I have also worked as a research assistant in a bioengineering lab, a tissue engineering lab, and an immunology lab.

Calculus

I have taken university level Calc 1 & 2, differential equations, linear algebra, and multivariable calculus and have maintained a 3.88/4.0 GPA in these classes. I use calculus daily in my chemical engineering classes and have learned how to help others with questions they may have about the calculus we use.

Chemical Engineering

I am a senior in the chemical engineering program at Brigham Young University. As part of my education, I have taken courses in chemical process principles, fluid mechanics, materials science, thermodynamics, heat and mass transfer, chemical reaction engineering, and biochemical engineering while maintaining a 3.85/4.0 GPA in these courses. My work history includes being employed as an intern with BASF, a large chemical manufacturing company. In addition, I have also had research experience in chemical thermodynamics, bioengineering, and tissue engineering.

Chemistry

I have taken university level general chemistry (2 semesters), organic chemistry (2 semesters + a lab), biochemistry (1 semester), and physical chemistry (1 semester). My GPA in these classes averages out to be 3.78 out of 4.0.

MCAT

In preparation for taking the MCAT, I studied Kaplan's 7-book series for the MCAT, took Altius Test Prep's practice tests, and used NextStep's CARS book to improve that section. After heavily studying for 6 months, I scored a 512 on the MCAT including subject scores of 129 (92nd percentile) in the Chemistry/Physics section and 130 (97th percentile) in the Biology/Biochemistry section. I mastered the material through the time and work I put in to studying.

Organic Chemistry

During my education in chemical engineering at Brigham Young University, I took 3 organic chemistry courses: o-chem 1, o-chem 2, and o-chem lab. My average GPA in these classes was 3.89 out of 4.0 which is very high. In addition to these classes, I have also taken 1 year of general chemistry, and one semester each of biochemistry and physical chemistry, so I have an extensive background in chemistry.

Physiology

I took Physiology at BYU from Dr. Porter and not only got an A in the class, but also scored in the top 10% of the class. I have also reviewed this material in preparing for the MCAT and have tutored a student in physiology and helped her achieve her goals.
