About Jamie

Hi all! I hold a degree in Biochemistry from Oberlin College (Ohio), where I was a highly-recommended chemistry tutor employed by the university. I have additional teaching experience as an instructor of Javanese gamelan (traditional Indonesian music) in Oberlin's Experimental College program, where I led classes for three semesters. I also worked as a professional English teacher while living for two years in Indonesia (2013-2015), teaching all ages and levels and developing effective and engaging ways to manage a classroom. After my travels, I am currently working as a laboratory technician at Wenatchee Valley College in Omak, Washington, helping to write laboratory curricula and guiding students through their science courses. I hope to eventually pursue my PhD and work in academia, private research or public service.

As a tutor and teacher, my goal is to listen very carefully to my students and attend directly to the most important questions or concepts that need tackling. My trademark is personal, thoughtful attention, always combined with smiles and a sense of humor. I've helped many high school and college students, and learners of the English language, boost their confidence and their exam scores by taking time to creatively explain concepts, work thoroughly and patiently when facing tough problems, and practice material effectively.

If you need help with math, chemistry, biology, or if you are learning English as your second language, or even if you are looking to boost your ACT or SAT scores, I'm here for you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Chemistry

I graduated from Oberlin College in 2013, with a degree in Biochemistry. Many of my classes were intensive combinations of lecture and laboratory work in subjects such as General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, Inorganic Chemistry, and Biochemistry. Upon graduation, I was awarded with certification by the American Chemical Society in recognition of my adherence to a more comprehensive program than was required, and for high grades in my courses. Additionally I was recommended to tutor General and Organic Chemistry through the school tutoring center, which I did for two semesters. I have solid theoretical and laboratory experience thanks to my classes, as well as three semesters of research in an Oberlin biochemistry laboratory. I am thus well qualified to help students with their questions about any and all basic chemical concepts, reactions, and mechanisms.

ESL/ESOL

I have over two years of experience teaching English in Indonesia, gained while I was employed as a teacher at a local language school. My students were of all ages and the courses I taught covered all levels, from introducing basic vocabulary to children through use of games and flashcards, to holding advanced conversation classes with college-age and adult students. My classes tend to take a direct approach, as I encourage the constant use of English in order to quickly build confidence and skills. But I'm not a stickler for mistakes or a demanding instructor; rather I make use of all kinds of activities and games to provide a fun yet productive learning environment for ESL students!

Indonesian

I gained fluency with the Indonesian language after living in the country for over two years, during which time I was a student at a Javanese arts conservatory and a teacher at a local English language school. Through countless conversations with friends, teachers, and students, in parallel with my lectures at school, I was able to gain excellent command of both formal and conversational varieties of the language, both being important for true fluency. I can assist with learning vocabulary and grammar at their most basic levels, to covering more advanced vocabulary and structures, all combined with my own insights gained from living in Indonesian society. I make use of flashcards, games, drills, worksheets, and conversation to provide an experience that is not only productive, but fun!

Organic Chemistry

I graduated from Oberlin College in 2013, with a degree in Biochemistry. I took three classes in the subject (Organic Chemistry, Bioorganic Chemistry, and Synthesis Laboratory), earning an A- average in those classes. I was recommended to tutor Organic Chemistry through the school tutoring center, which I did for two semesters. I have solid theoretical and laboratory experience thanks to my classes, as well as three semesters of research in an Oberlin biochemistry laboratory. I am well qualified to help students with their questions about basic organic and bioorganic chemical concepts, reactions, and mechanisms.

TOEFL

While living in Indonesia for two years, I was employed as an English teacher at a local language school. My classes were diverse in content and my students were of all ages, but I particularly enjoyed working with teenagers and adults who were preparing for study in the United States or another English-speaking country. I familiarized myself with TOEFL content and taught a specialized TOEFL preparation course for employees at the Indonesian National Bank. I am prepared to address students' needs on all sections of the TOEFL exam with a variety of practice techniques and methods that are not only effective, but fun!
