About Kay

I am passionate about life-long learning and I enjoy helping others discover the joy of learning and being empowered by information. I believe we can all enhance our learning of any subject by use of good habits, discipline, routine, and simple study skills. Learning is also enhanced by a relaxed and fun atmosphere, where creativity and imagination are just as important as pen and paper.

I maintained a 4.0 GPA through two master's degrees from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary, one in Marriage and Family Therapy and another in Psychology and Counseling. I was on the Dean's List and a member of a National Honor's Society at Loyola and Delgado Community College while earning a BA in Psychology and an AA in Sign Language Interpreting. While you may not need help with any of these subjects, I am happy to share the study skills and methods I utilized to master these and other subjects. I offer tutoring help with all of the subjects I am very strong in at the elementary level, including, but not limited to American Sign Language, Psychology, Reading, Writing, Spelling, English, Science, History, Geography, and Social Studies. Of all academic subjects, I am weakest in math, but can certainly help students at the elementary level with all math concepts.

I have worked as a sign language interpreter in the school systems K-college level, a Park Ranger, a Realtor, a Job Coach, a Financial Advisor, a Counselor/Therapist, a Management and Sales Recruiter, an Executive Secretary, a Floral Designer, a Waitress, a Retail Salesperson, and I have owned and operated my own custom drapery-making business. I am currently pursuing ESA certification in School Counseling. All of these many varied positions have helped me to be well-rounded and comfortable with folks from all walks of life.

For fun, I love to travel to mountainous states to hike. So far, I have hiked 20 US states, and in Italy and Greece. I am an avid Saints fan and dedicate time each week on health and fitness. I am an active member of The Church of Living Water in Olympia, WA, volunteering in a variety of ministries, including Kids Hope USA, and I am a member of The Billy Graham Rapid Response Team of Chaplains.

I agree with and operate according to all of Wyzant's standard policies, including scheduling, cancellation, rate and method of payment. I am very interested in talking with you further to ascertain whether or not I am the right tutor for your specific and unique needs.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Fitness

I have worked with a personal trainer for many years, maximizing healthy nutrition and toning and building muscle mass, and flexibility. For the past 15 years, I have participated in fitness classes 3-5 days each week, including Zumba, Body Pump, Pilates, Yoga, Kick-boxing, and alternate with cardo workouts. Over the past 30 years, I have hiked most mountainous states, including AL, AK, CA, CO, GA, LA, ME, MS, NH, NC, OR, SC, SD, TN, TX, UT, VT, WA, WY, CO, as well as Greece and Italy.

Handwriting

For the past 4 years, I have worked throughout the school system as a substitute in grades Pre-K - 12. When working with the younger students, I helped them to learn to read and write, beginning with alphabet in print and progressing through to composition writing in script or cursive, in upper grades. Often, exceptionally bright students with the right answer simply need to write more slowly and carefully to get full credit for a correct response, which, when written sloppily, may be marked wrong.

Hard Of Hearing

I have a certificate in Manual Communication, an Associates degree in American Sign Language Interpreting, and I have worked as an Educational Interpreter in the school system for 4 years Pre-K - 12 grades. I have a network of Deaf friends and colleagues, from Louisiana to Washington state, including many in the local Deaf church. Since 1988, I have worked in the community as an interpreter and volunteered in a wide variety of Deaf events, including Deaf Fest, and Special Olympics.

Needlework

I have created many works of needle art for gifts and for sale. I had a custom drapery-making business for 10 years. I am familiar with most sewing machines, can knit, crochet, do cross-stitch, embroidery, and/or make everyday repairs by hand with a common needle and thread.

Phonics

I have worked for the past 4 years in the school system in grades pre-K - 12 as a substitute. When working with younger students, it was often my responsibility to help students gain an understanding and mastery of phonics in order to increase their scores on standardized tests and facilitate socialization.

Religion

I attended Catholic grammar schools, and my BA in Psychology was earned at Loyola, a Catholic University, which required a survey of all world religions. My 2 Masters degrees are from the Baptist Theological Seminary. These are actually theology degrees with minors in Psychology and Counseling and Marriage and Family Therapy. Biblical studies required include: Greek, Hebrew, Biblical History/Geography, Hermeneutics, Apologetics, Archaeology, Pneumatology, Eschatology, Christian Disciplines, Ethics, Anthropology, Old and New Testament Studies, and more.

Sewing

I have created many works of needle art for gifts and for sale. I had a custom drapery-making business for 10 years. I am familiar with most sewing machines, can knit, crochet, do cross-stitch, embroidery, and/or make everyday repairs by hand with a common needle and thread.

Sign Language

I have a certificate in Manual Communication, an Associates degree in American Sign Language Interpreting, and I have worked as an Educational Interpreter in the school system for 4 years Pre-K - 12 grades. I have a network of Deaf friends and colleagues, from Louisiana to Washington state, including many in the local Deaf church. Since 1988, I have worked in the community as an interpreter and volunteered in a wide variety of Deaf events, including Deaf Fest, and Special Olympics.

Sociology

I earned a BA in Psychology from Loyola University, earning a GPA of 3.875, and a spot on the Dean's list for several semesters. As part of the coursework for that degree, there were many credit hours required in associated fields, such as sociology, social work, anthropology, and philosophy. My 2 Masters degrees from the New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary also included an emphasis in sociological aspects of religion and Christianity.

Study Skills

I have a AA, and a BA, and 2 Masters degrees. I was on the honor roll during the BA and AA and made straight A's through both Masters degrees. I have 4 years experience (K-12) helping students improve their understanding and scores in a variety of subjects.
