About Holly

For more than 40 years I have been teaching academic subjects along with performing and visual arts, environmental education, English as a second language, journalism, poetry, and creative writing. I am a published playwright, professional actor, director, recording artist and singer/songwriter with international touring experience. I lived in England for six years, touring and recording with my late guitar-legend husband and studying human relations. I have a Masters in Teaching from The Evergreen State College and am certified in English and Drama with continuing and current state certification K-12. I taught full-time on the elementary and high school levels, and substitute now in many subjects for schools in Olympia, Tumwater and Shelton. I taught English for COMPASS USA recently to Japanese-speaking students from Okinawa. I have a working knowledge of Spanish and some French, and am comfortable helping students improve their English skills. I teach based upon what the student most needs to know, determining together and with parents how best to achieve goals, basing lessons upon interests. I am versatile, skilled, capable, kind, and clear, with a good sense of humor, a love of community, experience in alternative education, and a commitment to peace. Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

With 8 recordings to my credit since 1971, including one on Decca Records and one on President Records (London) with my late husband, guitar legend Davy Graham, I have been working in music and writing songs for a variety of purposes for 38 years. I have published my own original songs in musicals, on CDs on my own label, and for issues that are dear to my heart, and have been composing music since I learned to play guitar in 1972. I also give voice lessons after careful consideration of the student and their intentions. I am a professional, working singer and recording artist. My compositions are sung by many people in the world of folk and children's music.

Elementary (K-6th)

I hold teacher certification in the state of Washington and am an active guest teacher in elementary schools and high schools in three local districts. I have held continuing certification in Washington State since 1992, earning my Masters in Teaching and Teacher Certification from The Evergreen State College, plus 60 credits towards my doctorate. I taught performing arts on the elementary level for 2 years, and Senior English and Drama on the high school level for 1 year. My teaching certificate is current. I am endorsed in English and Drama, with K-12 certification. I also perform assemblies and poetry and young author's presentations for elementary ages on a regular, contracted basis.

I am a certified teacher endorsed in English and drama with a continuing certificate K-12. I have taught English at the high school level and received my BA in English and drama. I possess a master's degree in teaching. I am a published writer, playwright, poet, and lyricist. I am also skilled in various other subjects, and a regular substitute on the high school and elementary levels in several school districts.

I have worked doing ESL with students from Okinawa, Japanese speakers, and enjoyed it very much. I also learned a lot. Because I speak Spanish enough to help with vocabulary and syntax, I will be a useful tutor in the art of mastering the English language! I have some good ideas and am a careful listener, patient and with a sense of humor.

Writer for local paper Olympia Power and Light New Business column since October 2011. Published poet and songwriter, playwright, editor.

Public Speaking

A veteran performer and public speaker, I have used the Pubic Speaking and Debate classes I took in high school and college and built upon them with many public speaking opportunities since, in national and international venues. I won a Rotary Club scholarship based upon a public speech given as a high school student. Poised, literate, humorous, versatile, informed and at ease, I am an activist who uses public speaking (and writing for a reason) to educate, enlighten, and entertain.

I am a published writer, playwright, and composer. I have 50 years of writing for various reasons to my credit, and currently write a column for a monthly newspaper here in Olympia, for which I am paid. My daily work as a substitute teacher keeps me up with the curriculum for 8-year-olds in this system, and I have experience with reading programs being used in local schools.

Study Skills

I am an active teacher, certified and busy, working in elementary schools as a substitute for the last 17 years after teaching full-time for three. I have assisted many students with study skills in this capacity. It is essential to be prepared in clear and focused ways, to know what the expectations are when dealing with studying, to fully read and understand the directions, and to relax before beginning any academic work. Studying is essential to success in any setting, and getting off to a good, confident start is necessary. I can help students organize their studies and approach them with confidence and humor.

With a BA degree in Theater and English from The University of South Florida attained in 1967 and 45 years experience in professional theater in the US and the UK, I am more than qualified to teach all aspects of theater. From stage craft, writing, directing, acting, costuming, and performance, I am talented and able. I belong to Actors' Equity Association, and have since 1974, earning the card in Dinner Theater. An Artist in the Schools doing theater and music in Washington, Nevada, Alaska, and Florida, I have written 30 plays for classrooms and 7 musicals produced in professional and amateur productions. I did 108 Residencies in Theater for youth and the incarcerated...this is considered being very busy and very successful teaching and fostering the arts. I am a current performer, doing Instant Plays in libraries and school assemblies. I have written, administered and performed 5 environmentally educational musicals under contract for various water agencies in Florida and Olympia, WA in the last 10 years. I have won awards for acting, playing varied character roles over the last 30 years, and I have formed two children's theater companies since 1980.I am good at theater and I love it.
