About Jane

I enjoy working with adult students. We, as adults, have an end-goal in mind: getting a degree, getting a job, or getting a promotion. It is that focus and drive that enables us to identify where and how we need help.

I also enjoy working with young people who posses the ownership of their learning path. My most successful young learners accepted help and encouragement, while using the skills discussed in a lesson for their own empowerment in school.

I focus on the skill at hand, the tools for understanding, and the long-reaching future application and then implications the skill will have.

I look forward to meeting you soon to help you reach your goals.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra is a course in which basic algebraic concepts are introduced and mastered. Algebra 1 is taught at the high school level and occasionally at the middle school level to 8th grade students. Students learn how to solve for variables, how to manipulate integers, and how to graph and find equations for lines, bisectors, midpoints, and so on.

College level algebra is another level of algebra. It tends to go more in depth and require a deeper understanding of theorems and applications.

I am very comfortable assisting students with either level of algebra.

I use the book Algebra and Trigonometry with Analytic Geometry, by Swokowski and Cole, 10th edition. This is a college level book and I am confident it will help with learning the concepts of the course.

ASVAB

The ASVAB is a battery of skills test designed to identify approprate placement into a military job, or "rate." Higher scores enable prospective military personnel to select from a wider variety of rates. Lower scores limit the rate options. Scores which are not passing may prevent a person from joining the Armed Forces.

I was enlisted in the NAVY and last took the ASVAB in 2001 with a score of 97. If you are interested in receiving help with the ASVAB, please let me know. I want you to be as successful as possible, and to open up as many rate options as you can.

Elementary Math

Student success in early math is essential to ensure self-confidence, achievement, and growth potential throughout the rest of their schooling career.

As a previous Sylvan tutor, I am skilled at identifying underlying skills to support current areas of need.

ESL/ESOL

Learning English is a very complex process. It takes time, dedication, study, and lots of practice. Each ESL student is unique, with varying levels of skills and abilities.

I am not bilingual, but I am confident in my ability to communicate across the language divide and help students reach their goals with English. I have the most experience with lower and intermediate level English Speakers.

Proofreading

I am a University of Phoenix Alum, and have access to writing and proofreading tools through the University that aren't readily available to the public.

In addition, I wrote 2 papers per week for the duration of my Bachelor and Master's programs. (That totals many, many papers!) I was given very helpful feedback from my professors, and am eager to share their knowledge and insights with the next generation of students.

Finally, I have learned some tricks of the trade myself, regarding how to streamline the paper, organize the thought process, and develop the thesis.

Very patient and easy to work with

Jane B was requested to help my son prep for the asvab. She was thoughtful in her approach to test take strategies. Jane aided my son in raising his score approx 30%. Now that he has taken the test and on his way we would like to thank her for her help. I would recommend her.
