I am a nationally certified Spanish translator, a conference interpreter, and a National Merit Scholar (my PSAT score paid for my private university tuition). I have over 30 years of tutoring experience.
What sets me apart from many tutors is that I work well with any age and can tutor almost anything. Not probability, physics, or calculus, but most other preK-12 subjects, as well as most standardized tests (GED, PSAT, SAT, ACT, GRE and GMAT).
My most frequently requested subjects are test prep, Spanish (any level at all), and math (basic math through algebra, geometry, and pre-calculus). I have also tutored just about everything else.
My tutoring approach is to keep things light, and also to keep the student engaged, with the goal of keeping learning enjoyable and also learning as much as possible. In practical terms, that means that sometimes I will let the student lead me on a tangent for a short while (during which time we learn more about something the student is genuinely interested in, and/or I can tie it back to something the student is learning). If I arrive to a student who is having a bad day, I will take the time to help them out of their funk, until they are ready to engage again with learning. If I see that the student has been working too hard and is getting fatigued, we'll take a couple minutes to talk about something else or just take a brief break before getting back into studying. I find that respecting my students' humanity really helps them to stay motivated to learn.
