Bio

I am a certified math teacher with 15 years of experience. I have a genuine love of teaching and enjoy helping each student realize his or her potential. I have taught algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and SAT prep at the high school level, and algebra and prealgebra in middle school. I have taught classes in both English and Spanish. I have taught algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, and SAT prep at the high school level, and algebra and prealgebra in middle school. I have taught classes in both English and Spanish. Prior to becoming a teacher I had 15 years of “real world” experience with math working in corporate finance.

My objective is to have the math concepts make sense to my students. I help them develop a sense of mathematical reasoning and teach them a variety of problem solving strategies. Over my years as a teacher I have developed a large portfolio of lessons and activities that engage students and help them understand not only how to do the math, but why it works. I am proud that many of my students have told me that I completely changed their attitudes towards math.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

Algebra is not only extremely useful, but it can also be interesting and fun! Algebra is the key to a student’s success in math and is the focus of the math on college entrance exams. Algebra is my specialty. I have successfully taught algebra to all kinds of students, from students with special needs, to honors students, to adults. I have a knack for making seemingly complicated concepts easy to understand and use.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

Algebra 2 is where students can begin to see the usefulness of what they learned in Algebra 1. I have experience teaching Algebra 2 using several different curriculums. I have found that focusing on basic skills can help virtually all students enjoy success in this subject. In teaching algebra concepts I like to use real life examples so that the math makes sense.
Geometry,

Geometry

I have many years' experience teaching geometry to a variety of students, from special needs to English language learners to honor students. Geometry is a very visual subject, so I like to use hands-on activities to help students understand the concepts. Many students are intimidated by all of the new vocabulary that geometry presents. But I have found that if they are provided with clear, straightforward definitions and examples of the terms, they have no problem handling the concepts.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

I have many years’ experience teaching prealgebra and algebra to middle school students. This is a fun stage in a student’s education as they need to begin to think and reason, not just memorize. I specialize in explaining things clearly so that the student can understand why and how the math works. I also like to help students build confidence in their math and problem solving abilities. A lot of students who claim to “not be good” at math actually have a lot of potential. I have seen many such students turn out to be great mathematicians!
SAT Math

SAT Math

The new version of the math SAT focuses on algebra, which is my specialty. But I have taught all of the math topics that might appear on the test including algebra 1, algebra 2, geometry, statistics, and probability. I proctored the SAT for several years and know well what test day is like. Knowing "how to take a test" is as important as your math knowledge. I not only teach my students the math, but I also prepare them with proven problem solving and test taking strategies.

Great fit that has my son feeling confident

Mr. John has been a great fit in tutoring my son. I have already seen an improvement in my son's homework after 3 lessons and believe results will continue to improve. Strongly recommend Mr. John.

Great tutor: knowledgeable and patient!

John did a great job with my son. He was very interested in Alex and wanted to learn about him and his abilities directly. He was patient and explained things in a way my son could understand. He was very positive with encouraging statements and input for Alex, so he felt good about what he knew rather than bad about what he did not know. Most importantly, my son felt good about it and felt like it helped him. It was much safer and supportive where he could ask questions and not feel embarrassed.
