About April

My passion and expertise are to help struggling students find academic success and confidence. I am a Special Education Para Educator with several years of experience instructing at-risk students at Overlake Specialty School, which is an alternative school for students with behavioral and mental health issues. My education includes a Bachelor's Degree, Life Skills Crisis Intervention (LSCI) Certification, and Right Response Level 5 Certification.

I work with students who are often very bright, charismatic and excel in many areas, but perform below grade level in a particular subject. I've supported dozens of students in math, reading, writing, science and social skills, and work well with those who have Autism Spectrum Disorder, Asperger's Syndrome, ADD, and ADHD. Students who are anxious or oppositional find my style positive and supportive.

Through positive behavioral support and encouragement, I help students increase their confidence, focus and grades. Although I enjoy tutoring students of all ages, I have the most experience with grades 5-10.

Feel free to reach out if you have any questions, or whether you'd like to determine if I am a good match for your needs. Please note that I am available to interview and instruct via online tutoring (I've found this to be helpful and time saving for busy families). Thank you!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I taught and tutored Algebra 1 to students of various learning abilities and ages. I worked with students one on one, in small groups, and classroom settings.

Anatomy

Graduated with a B.S. in (Human) Physiology, plus was a physiology preceptor for a college intro anatomy and physiology class. Not only have I taken these classes myself, but I've taught, administered, and graded real tests in this subject.

Anthropology

I graduated from the University of Arizona and achieved a BS in Physiology with a minor in Anthropology. My minor GPA was a 4.0. My coursework included foundational, lower, and upper division courses with an emphasis on biological anthropology. Upper division coursework included: Culture and the Individual, Sacred Places, Nutritional Anthropology, and Human Evolutionary Biomechanics.

Autism

I successfully support high functioning students with autism meet their IEP goals in reading, writing, math (counting through algebra), spelling, and science. I use positive behavioral support to engage and keep students focused on the task, adapt my communication and instruction to meet the learning needs of each individual student, and incorporate the use of visuals. My experience includes over two years of individual and group in a special education middle school classroom at a specialty school, where I worked closely with the lead special education teacher to develop and implement academic lessons and activities.

Elementary Math

I taught 2nd - 7th grade math (pre-algebra) to students of all ages and abilities, in both one on one and classroom settings. I found it helpful to explain math level using objects and physical examples.

Prealgebra

I taught math and provided one-on-one and group instruction to grades 5-8.

I successfully supported students in reaching and exceeding grade levels in pre-algebra and algebra, and increased students' confidence in math.

Adapted lessons to meet special needs.

Reading

Students with short attention spans or learning disabilities like dyslexia often struggle with reading comprehension and confidence. I work with students to develop note taking skills, which boosts engagement and understanding. Students learn how to skim text for clues and themes, "chunk" together text and summarize key ideas, and build vocabulary by identifying unfamiliar words.

Special Needs

As a special education para educator, I have over two years of experience instructing and supervising at-risk students with mental and behavioral health challenges. I successfully support students in growing and gaining confidence toward reaching grade level in math, writing, reading, science, spelling, and study skills. After reviewing assignments and curriculum, I adapt my one-on-one instruction to meet the learning challenges of each child, and use positive behavioral support to build trust and rapport. I am LSCI (Life Skills Crisis Intervention) and Right Response Certified.

Learning and behavioral issues I have experience with include: Autism Spectrum, ODD and Oppositional behavior, ADD and ADHD, Asperger's Syndrome, Anxiety and Depression.

Study Skills

As an Instructional Assistant to children with learning disabilities, I helped students identify and develop better study skill habits that fit their particular learning style, special needs, and age. Note taking, organization, repetition and review, note cards, and mnemonic devices were especially helpful. Students also worked to develop mental preparedness, which helps to build confidence in ability.
