About Kathryn

I have always had a love for teaching. It started when I was a kid and helped my brother learn to read. It progressed to my high school years when I began tutoring neighbor kids, and continued to my university career when I worked as an elementary, college and Master's level tutor, assisting in subjects ranging from arithmetic, to reading, to researching and proofing major college papers. My goal for each tutoring session has always been to challenge the student but not overwhelm them. I build their confidence in the subject area so it can be applied to school, SAT and ACT exams. Long-term commitments to students is my style, and I prefer to stick with students throughout the learning process.

I graduated from Western Washington University in June 2013 with a Bachelor's degree in English Literature. After graduation I joined the Peace Corps and began teaching 12th grade Geometry and Algebra. I am currently enrolled at Skagit Valley College taking the courses required for admission into Bastyr University's Naturopathic Medicine program, taking all the Chemistry and Biology courses I can handle.

I specialize in tutoring English, Algebra, Geometry, Reading and Writing. Due to my current studies, I can also tutor beginning Chemistry and Biology. My tutoring experience ranges from elementary math and reading to Master's level writing. I began tutoring over ten years ago as an after-school math and reading teacher to 4th-5th graders, and I continued tutoring friends and local students throughout my college career. While in community college I tutored in the writing center, helping fellow students structure and write term papers, proofread their work, and format work cited pages. For one year I assisted a woman who was pursuing a Master's in Business; she spoke English as her second language, and I walked her through editing her papers and strengthening her knowledge of grammar and syntax. As an English Literature major, I have a thorough understanding of modern and classic literature and can tutor students who are preparing for the SAT or in the process of writing major term papers. I also just returned from a service in the Peace Corps Liberia, where I took part in an intensive 6-week training course focused on teacher and student learning strategies, during which time I also taught 12th grade Geometry and Algebra.

I am flexible with my time and have a 3-hour cancellation policy. I am able to travel to a student's home for tutoring sessions, but am also willing to meet in libraries or other quiet study areas throughout town.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you or your child achieve academic success!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Geometry

- 8 week Peace Corps teacher training course
- 2 months teaching a high school Geometry class in the Peace Corps
- 1 month tutoring a 10th grade Geometry student who is seeing improvement in test scores
- Received A's in all my past math courses in school, which include Geometry, Algebra 1 & 2, and Precalculus

Study Skills

I took a Study Skills course my first term in University and I learned effective and well-organized note taking , strategies to help prepare for tests, and methods to relieve anxiety around test-taking and assignments that help students clear their minds and focus on the problems in front of them. I have several years of experience in tutoring and helping students complete major projects and study for finals, all of whom have been successful. I also participated in an 8-week training course with the Peace Corps that educated me on different learning styles and how students can benefit from various teaching techniques; such as, learning through song, poems, visual stimulus, mnemonics, building models, writing notes, tactile learning, repeating important points back to me, and many others. I enjoy breaking down overwhelming processes into small, manageable steps, and creating effective and organized study strategies so the student can be successful. For these reasons I believe I am qualified to be a Study Skills tutor.

Awesome tutor

Our daughter has been struggling with geometry, maybe passing tests with low D's. With Kathryn's help our daughter came home today excited to tell us she got an A on her most recent test. We are extremely excited to see her continued improvement under Kathryn's tutoring.
