Bio

I’m Kaitlin! I graduated from college with a degree in English and minors in theology and ancient languages. I then became a copy editor at a newspaper and got invaluable experience with real-world editing, proofreading, and design. After realizing how rewarding it was to break down reading and writing techniques to teach others, I went on to get my masters degree in teaching. Since then, I’ve been teaching English in a public high school for 5 years, 3 of which have included co-taught classes in partnership with special education teachers.

After I became an English teacher, I began hosting a creative writing club at my school at the request of some of my students. Through that, I rediscovered a love for creative writing that began in childhood. I now am writing poetry, short fiction, and novels. While I am well versed in teaching Common Core standards for English, I get special joy from teaching creative writing. I also find editing and proofreading aspiring writers' stories very rewarding.

Graphic Design

For three of my five years of teaching at a public high school, I taught Yearbook and Advanced Yearbook. Much of this class involves teaching graphic design skills, such as the four principles of the C.R.A.P. acronym: Contrast, Repetition, Alignment, and Proximity. Other concepts I taught include balance, focal points, theme, color schemes, and font styles. I also took a graphic design class as part of my literature studies in college, with the end product being a book that I edited, designed, and published.

Business

Microsoft Word,

Microsoft Word

I have used Microsoft for multiple projects over many years - writing, handouts for students, graphic design, pamphlets, and more. I also have significant teaching experience, which means that I know how to start off with a pre-assessment to take stock of your current skill and then build future lessons from there. Furthermore, my school district uses Microsoft as the main platform for our students, so I have not only been trained in the different Microsoft programs, but I have taught colleagues and students how to use them as well.
Public Speaking

Public Speaking

I have practiced public speaking in a variety of ways. When I was completing my creative writing portfolio in college, part of my final project was performing a reading of my work. I also did public readings of my poetry at community locations. After college, I became a ministry intern and preached sermons, led youth groups, gave short speeches, and led small group studies. Since completing my Masters in Teaching, I've been a teacher at a public high school for 5 years. This position requires daily public speaking and improvisation.
