About Briana

My philosophy of education is hands-on experience and engaging students through questioning and exploration to ensure long-term retention. I currently teach middle school math and science part-time at a private school. I also have experience teaching high school math and science, with my expertise being in math, physics, and chemistry. While attending college, I worked in a Physics Learning Lab for three years focusing on student understanding in both one-on-one and small group situations. Before that, I was a tutor primarily for High School and Running Start students.

I love working with students of all ages and ability. My priority is to understand the student's needs and meet them as quickly as possible. Much of the time, I am able to address study and homework habits and help students help themselves within a matter of a few weeks. When a student and tutor find a good fit, it is often easy to do drop-in sessions to quickly pick up a few concepts when each party knows and trusts the other. I look forward to building that trust.

I prefer for students to meet at the Monroe Public Library. Depending on your location, I may request some drive-time billing as well.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

In college I focused on Student Understanding and have worked with students from a diverse background including ELL, IEPs, adults, and excel students. My specialty is in helping students learn what works best for them so they can succeed on their own.

C++

I completed two quarters of C++ in college with an A and a B+ before moving on to other programming languages. I used C++ in my physics experiments courses and am familiar with the basics of computational algorithms including boolean logic, arrays, stacks, commenting code, and how to use Visual Basic.

Chemistry

I really enjoy helping students in both high school and college level chemistry. It was in my third year of college that I switched from Chemistry to Physics, but I still really enjoy helping students understand what they are learning. My specialty is helping students create problem-solving strategies so they can study on their own, but I also enjoy providing help with lab write-ups and helping students improve their over-all grades.
