Let's get you past the various blocks and on to better test scores, better written correspondence and essay creation, and a better understanding of the English language and how to make it work optimally for you.

Tutoring is a joy for me; awarding so much of what I love doing in one package: teaching, sharing, and connecting. I have decades of cumulative experience as a marketing copywriter, local newspaper reporter, and freelance copywriter & editor. I am looking to share my love of and expertise in all forms of writing, grammar, proofreading, and the art of persuasion. I enjoy working with people of all ages and getting tasks accomplished together...specifically, you accomplishing them with my help.

I offer assistance in the following:

Writing
Good writing is efficient. It packs a punch and engages your reader. From writing assignments in school, to college applications, to being able to write a solid email in the workplace, it all matters, and is cornerstone to expressing yourself academically, professionally, and personally. I can help with all aspects pertaining to the written word -- paragraph and essay construction, thesis writing, how to edit your own writing, and beyond. You will develop brainstorming and outlining technique that gets you started comfortably, so you avoid the dreaded blank piece of paper or monitor staring back at you.

Reading
Reading comprehension is vital to success in all areas of academia. Regardless of school subject, if you’re unable to glean key information from directions and passages, you could easily fall behind. Reading comprehension is included in most standardized tests and is critical to strong scholastic development. Being a solid reader sets a foundation for a lifetime of learning, and of interpreting information swiftly and accurately. I approach reading with my students by first getting a sense of your comfort level and aptitude and building from there. You will learn how to read critically, absorbing key information the first time while effectively disregarding outside distractions so, with practice, you’ll be able to read any given piece just once. Vocabulary development goes hand in hand with reading comprehension. Your vocabulary stays with you for life and helps you better understand and communicate with the world. It enhances your writing in school and the workplace, and makes reading more seamless and enjoyable. We’ll mark words you’re unfamiliar with and go over them together. We’ll solidify pronunciation and usage, as well as dig into variants of the word, so you not only recognize it, but have a thorough understanding of its application.

Test Prep
Taking tests is nerve-wracking for most people, but it doesn’t have to be! Nerves associated with taking standardized tests can be alleviated by one simple detail: preparation. I will help you prepare for the SAT, GRE, or any state-based assessment test by grade. I will assess where you are currently at in your writing, vocabulary, and reading comprehension ability and we’ll develop a plan of attack. We’ll go over study tactics so you are able to spend your preparation time efficiently, covering information relevant to the test itself. Additionally, you will complete at least one practice test to increase your comfort level and alleviate any elements of surprise on the big day. We will discuss ways to minimize test day stress and outsmart test-taking intimidation. All in all, our work together will arm you with honed skills and strong preparedness, and give you the confidence to tackle the section head-on.

Thanks Erika's coaching for my son's writing

Erika is the best in writing teaching. She not only revised the English paper but also taught "how to". We feel our son is lucky to meet Erika today to learn how to write English better from her. Thanks so much!!!

Erika is a god-send for my boy

My son was struggling with LA and since Erika took over he has shown remarkable improvement. I am planning on using her for my younger kid also. She is always on time, is courteous but also firm and has a calming presence.

Erika is fantastic

Erika is fantastic -- extremely reliable, and VERY patient. I have a son who hates/avoids writing, and they have developed a great relationship. He enjoys working with her. My son can be very frustrating at times...she is always patient and works well with him.

Very Knowledgeable and Understanding

During my first session with Erika she helped me outline and brainstorm my Foster School of Business admissions essay. Erika was able to understand my goals very well, and she helped me articulate my experiences into cohesive and flowing paragraphs accordingly. She also went above and beyond to allocate extra time to proofread my later drafts within a short time frame. She recently also helped me do the same thing for another personal statement for college. I highly recommned her for any one looking for addtional help with their personal statements!

Excellent Writing Tutor!

My elementary- aged kids have been working with Erika for over 3 months now, and have made great progress in a short amount of time. She was able to quickly assess the areas in which they needed help in, and was also very flexible in structuring their lessons around topics that I chose. She gives them concrete suggestions and tips which they are then able to use at school, and have seen a definite improvement in their grades. She is also very kind and patient, and my kids feel very comfortable with her. I would definitely recommend her as a writing tutor!
