Western Washington University (Vocal Performance)
Hello and Guten Tag!
I'm a recent graduate of Western Washington University, where I majored in Vocal Performance and minored in German. I have been singing in choir since I was eight years old, and am well versed in a variety of musical styles, including Opera, Musical Theater, and Jazz. I have done several performances of both Opera and Musical Theater, my most recent being Massenet's "Cinderella." It was very important to me while in school and studying voice to understand how a child's voice is physiologically different from that of a fully developed adult's. Both children and adults become injured vocally, but it has especially become a problem in recent years with kids due to them being given repertoire above their level, being taught incorrectly and treated as an adult, and/or being turned away from any voice lessons at all because they are "too young," despite many of them already singing and performing on stage. So it was and still is very important for me as a teacher to know how the voice functions in both an adult student and a child student. It is also important to me for my students to become well-rounded musicians, so reading music, sight singing, and acting are all a part of the lesson.
As for non-musical studies, I loved the German language from the first class I took (and it is also one of the three main languages in opera,) so spending three years to get my German minor was a no-brainer! I believe I would be best suited as a tutor for students at the beginning and intermediate levels, and especially if you're looking for someone to help with grammar. I also am proficient in elementary studies from working after school care with the YMCA. For all students, I believe in modifying my teaching style to suit the student's needs. Not all people have the same style of learning, so being flexible and trying new ways to understand concepts and help my students be successful is one of my greatest assets.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
