My name is Willie. With regards to tutoring, I have five years of one-on-one tutoring experience. Students seek me out to improve their skills in a variety of areas, including Spanish and SAT test preparation. I have scored in the 90th percentile in both the Math and Verbal sections of the GRE, which is the graduate school version of the SAT.
When I work with students, I create multi-step plans when addressing learning difficulties. Students appreciate this layout and find improvement in their field of difficulty.
To have success in tutoring, the student should ask lots of questions and be willing to push themselves, even if that means making a mistake. Learning from mistakes is one of the best ways to educate oneself.
My academic experience includes a Bachelor of Arts in History from Gonzaga University and a Master of Arts in Latin American Studies from the University of New Mexico. With regards to Spanish, I worked as the coordinator and lead interpreter for a Spanish language school in Guatemala.
With regards to classroom teaching, I have taught English as a Second Language during my Peace Corps service. In the United States, I have taught U.S. and World History. Most recently, I served as an outdoor science teacher in Grand Teton National Park. Currently, I am applying to Physical Therapy school with a start date of September 2012.
My rate is posted on my profile. I am willing to negotiate this rate if you are willing to meet on Mercer Island.
I am a very patient individual who can assist students in reaching their highest potential. I look forward to working with you all!

Willie has been a life saver. My son got A's and B's in Spanish 1 however, Spanish 2 began with a solid F. Half way through the semester his grade was already up to a C and we are hoping for a B by semester. Then with Willie's help he should be able to get an A next semester. Willie knows how to get my son to understand the material. Willie is patient and a great teacher. I highly recommend him as a tutor!
Willie had a great way of adding what I needed to learn to the little I already knew. He inspired me to pursue my conversational skills and keep studying. His patience made me very relaxed and not uptight about showing my lack of skills.
Willie has been teaching our 10th grader since the start of the academic year. We are seeing the difference - last year, our son barely hung on to a B+, but has now started to ramp easily to an A. Willie is very patient - both with our son and with a hectic schedule that needs us sometime to request flexibility. Highly recommended!
Willie worked with my Sophomore son to finish strong in Spanish 3. He communicated well, was always very responsive to our requests and also accommodating to my son's changing schedule.
Willie has responded to all my emails. It has been easy to schedule a time that works for both of us. Willie has been able to identify skills that need work from the very first session, and has also given us some tips for what we can work on more regularly at home. My son seems to like working with Willie - so far his low-key approach seems to work well.
Willie is tutoring my 11th grade daughter for SAT prep. She is getting so much out of the lessons, and commented that it is helping her in her pre-calc class every day. Her confidence has gone up so much. She is a great math student who seemed to be struggling with all the junior year workload, but now is cruising more easily.
My son doesn't really enjoy his Spanish class, but he feels more confident when he has an opportunity to review things with Willie. He feels like he is improving, and his teacher said the same thing in class.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have three years of teaching Algebra 1 to students as young as 13 all the way to individuals in their 40's. Instruction includes breaking down problems in small, digestible steps that work toward a solution.
The elementary years are key for building successful basic skills that will be key to the rest of the learning process in Middle School and beyond.
Repetition and organization are the two pillars to elementary tutoring. When I work with students I will insist on students being organized, as in putting papers in binders and writing homework assignments down. There is no leeway in this regard.
Finally, I will have students do lots of repetition, especially in Math. Memorization does have its place in regards to multiplication tables. With regards to reading, it is important that students connect with the text. I emphasize on students writing down any connections they make with the text, by using Double-Entry Diaries, regardless of the subject they are studying.
I have over 300 hours of experience tutoring elementary-age students, including a great deal of time tutoring Spanish-speaking elementary-age students. Furthermore, I have classroom teaching experience with elementary-age students including a year of instruction with high-needs students. Finally, I have worked with first graders for an entire summer, teaching these young students environmental education in Grand Teton National Park.
I have years of proofreading experience, both as a student and teacher. I always make a point of going after wordy sentence structures and usage of the passive voice. It is important to be brief when making your point. However, when I work with students I also look for thesis statements, topic sentences, and paragraph transitions.
I have a history of public speaking as a professional. For three years I managed a Peace Corps recruiting office. This position afforded me many public-speaking opportunities on why one should join the Peace Corps. Public speaking is the art of engagement and I would like to teach students how to grab the attention of their audience and support themselves through evidence.
Furthermore, I am skilled at developing metaphors and believe that students would benefit from my instruction on creating metaphors in the context of public speaking.
I teach a number of strategies that will raise the SAT scores of your child. Strategies include:
1) NOT using Algebra, but rather use the more efficient system of plugging in.
2) Focusing on the easier problems, where more points may be attained!
3) Showing how POE (Process of Elimination) may be used to solve difficult Math problems.
4) Explaining the basic Mathematical principles present on the GRE.
I teach a number of strategies for the SAT Reading section that will raise your child's SAT score. Those strategies include:
1) Working with process of elimination.
2) Identification of trigger words.
3) Identifying answers through textual clues
4) Building vocabulary for greater content knowledge
5) Identifying dead giveaways that are definite wrong answers
I use the text 501 Spanish Verbs when working with students on their Spanish lessons.
Besides my fluency in Spanish, I am skilled at addressing the various verb structures in Spanish, along with their endings.
Like many languages, Spanish has many exceptions to rules, and those exceptions are addressed as well with students.
My students have included high-school and college-age students, political leaders, and working professionals in the business and information technology world.
Students lacking in study skills need organization. I have helped students with their study skills for the past three years.
I help students organize their time, so they can finish their assignments upon the due date.
Students have to be a part of their study skills plan and on that note I believe it is important to center their study skills plan around their interest.
I am especially skilled in giving students great skills in math and reading. I use the Tovani method when teaching reading, which involves making inferences about the reading material.
I also deconstruct math problems and show how students can achieve answers in a multi-step process.
I am interested in helping students in distance running. I run with one of the elite amateur clubs in the United States called Club Northwest. I have posted some fast times as an amateur runner, most recently a 1:16:20 at the Seattle Rock and Roll Half Marathon. I also have three seasons of volunteer coaching, including coaching at Gallup High School in Gallup, New Mexico, where the boys team was ranked #8 in the country in the fall of 2000.
