About Sarah

Hello! I am a friendly, approachable lover of math. I was a tutor while I was working on my undergraduate degree. I was a teaching assistant providing homework help for pre-algebra students during my undergrad, and a teaching assistant instructing various 100-level courses while earning my graduate degree. Upon completion of my graduate degree, I worked for three years as an instructor for the Western Washington University department of mathematics. I have since taken some time off to raise a family.

I can offer you my knowledge and patience while tackling your math difficulties. While tutoring I push students to think critically, so they can achieve understanding of a subject, not just understanding of a specific problem. My goal is for students to gain confidence in whatever subject they are struggling in. The goal is to work myself out of a job with you!

I have experience teaching pre-algebra, algebra, pre-calculus, calculus, and business calculus, and I like tutoring any subject from pre-algebra through calculus, including geometry, and trig. I am comfortable pushing students to do work with or without a calculator. My calculator of choice is the TI-83 by Texas Instruments, though I can adapt if your course requires something different.

If you are looking for a patient tutor that is excited to help you gain understanding on a subject you struggle with, I am here for you. I am capable of demonstrating more than one approach to achieve understanding and hope to improve your confidence and critical thinking in mathematics!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have B.S. and M.S. in mathematics. I tutored this material as an undergrad. I taught a course in this subject many times as an instructor at Western Washington University. If a student needs extra practice, I have notes to offer and extra problems for students to try.

Algebra 2

I have B.S. and M.S. in mathematics. I tutored this material as an undergrad. I taught a course in this subject many times as an instructor at Western Washington University. If needed, I have my own notes, problems, and a textbook on this subject for extra reference and practice problems.

Calculus

I have a B.S. and M.S. in mathematics, and I have taught Calc I and Business Calculus at Western Washington University. For these reasons, I can be a great source for study tips, practice problems, and clear explanations. I am also very familiar with the TI-83 calculator, if help is needed using this tool for your calculus class.

Geometry

I have B.S. and M.S. in mathematics. I tutored this material as an undergrad. While I have not specifically taught a geometry course, the subject matter has come up in many of the courses I have taught. It's one of my favorite areas of math.

Prealgebra

I have B.S. and M.S. in mathematics. I have probably worked with students on this subject the most. I have been both a T.A. and an instructor for this subject matter.

Precalculus

I have B.S. and M.S. in mathematics. I tutored this material as an undergrad. I taught a course in this subject many times as an instructor at Western Washington University.

Trigonometry

I have B.S. and M.S. in mathematics. Trig comes up in a lot of different math courses. Trig is not always offered as a lone course. Many students encounter trig when they take geometry or pre-calc. I have experience covering trig within pre-calc and calc classes that I taught at WWU.
