About Maggie

I have a varied work history but the experiences I have most enjoyed have always been working with youth and children and especially in a tutoring capacity. The look on a child’s face when they realize they have learned something new is one of the most profoundly beautiful in the world. I currently work with middle and high school aged youth as part of my duties while serving as pastoral intern at Maplewood Presbyterian church. While working at YouthCare with 12-17 year olds I frequently assisted with homework and quizzed students about what they learned in school during the day. One key piece of experience that did not fit on the application is a period of 18 months during my service in the Young Adult Volunteer program in Miami, FL at Sweet Home Missionary Baptist Church’s after-school program. I worked with roughly 40 k-12 students daily, predominantly elementary school students, as a tutor and mentor. My official volunteer service only lasted 12 months and I stayed for another 6 months until my college schedule would no longer allow me the freedom to participate. I still love and miss those students.

While working at Sweet Home I had the opportunity to work and learn alongside talented teachers to help bring the best out of our students. I would love nothing more than the opportunity to work in such a setting again. I am particularly interested in this position as a literacy tutor because with a B.A. in History and pursuing a Masters of Divinity reading and writing are my key strengths, however I have experience tutoring in most K-12 subjects.

I unfortunately do not own a car, but am quite mobile by bus and on occasion I have the opportunity to borrow a vehicle, as well as use car-sharing services such as car2go and ReachNow. I currently live in Lynnwood but spend a great deal of time in the North Seattle neighborhoods.

History has been my passion since I was a young child and became addicted to the books that accompanied the American Girls Dolls. I now hold a Bachelor of Arts in History and continue to read in a variety of realms.

It also appears that WyzAnt categorizes religion under the history heading and so it is also relevant here to mention that I am currently in the final stretches of completing a Master of Divinity degree and am pursuing Ordained Ministry in my denomination. With this said I am reasonably well read in world religions and keep an open mind. I also feel there may be some need to state that while much of my work experience is church based and I am pursuing a career in formal ministry as a tutor my job is to help you or your student in your/their particular topic of study, I will absolutely not be proselytizing.

I am very excited for the opportunity to work with students of all walks of life. Please contact me to learn more and to schedule lessons.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

As I stated under the religion category I am currently completing a Master's of Divinity degree through The Seattle School of Theology and Psychology. I have now completed about 80 credits of the program and have roughly 7 left to complete before graduation. I am on track for a graduation date of June 2017. Coursework included a variety of theological courses including studies in world religions, as well as Biblical language (Greek and Hebrew), Exegesis, and scholarship.
