About Jim

I enjoy tutoring both Math and English. Math is fun because it is logical and consistent--once students understand the algorithms for solving problems, all they need to do is follow them. However, English is often more subtle and nuanced. Although the rules of grammar and syntax are fairly consistent, mastering rhetoric or idioms requires careful study. Since I have vast experience in both fields, I can help students make rapid gains.

I have worked as a teacher and a tutor for more than 30 years, helping students at every level from elementary school to university. I love tutoring because it allows me to tailor lessons to the specific abilities and needs of one student, rather than a whole class. I also find tutoring especially rewarding because I can watch my student's progress and share moments of epiphany. I see learning as a process of discovery, so I see the tutor as a guide who knows the territory well and can help lead students to their goals. I would appreciate the opportunity to work with you and be part of your journey of discovery.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have tutored and taught students in Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, and Calculus.

Algebra 2

I am currently working for the Shoreline School District, and I have worked for Edmonds Community College, the University of Missouri, and Miami University.

ESL/ESOL

I have a BA in English, and I have worked as a teacher and a tutor since the 1980s. I worked for Edmonds Community College's Writing Center for 9 years, and about 60% of my students there were English Language Learners. I also worked at a Korean-American after school center, where almost all of the students had ESL needs, for 6 years.
