University of Maine (Mathematics)
University of Pittsburgh (Master's)
Hello! I moved from New Jersey to the Martha Lake area in the summer of 2017. For the past four years, I worked as a math tutor in New Jersey where I enjoyed helping students gain confidence and success in math. I am planning to continue tutoring here in Washington through the 2017-2018 school year.
I have a bachelor's degree in math from the University of Maine, and a master's degree in math from the University of Pittsburgh. At the University of Pittsburgh I worked as a teaching assistant, which included leading calculus class recitations and working with students in the on-campus math assistance center. My tutoring experience includes one-on-one tutoring in pre-algebra, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and calculus. In addition, I have helped students prepare for the math sections of tests such as the GRE and PRAXIS.
I understand that there is a difference between one-on-one tutoring and classroom instruction, and I love the freedom to really individualize my instruction for each student that I work with when I tutor. I work to meet each student at their current ability level, and to help them build an understanding of the subject so that they can begin to approach problems with confidence. Hello! Was very helpful. And worked well will my son explaining things very well in details. My son is struggling in geometry he’s in 9 th grade doing 10th grade work. He really liked Pamela and I think that she will be very helpful getting him caught up. We look forward to more sessions to come. Thank you!
Nate feels so much better about his math as a result of Pamela's expertise and time. She was able to "connect" with Nate, which made a huge difference. Thank you Pamela.
She takes her time and makes sure you understand each concept you have questions about! Will definitely see her again!!
We were lucky to find Pam for tutoring my daughter this summer. Pam was very flexible with her times and was able to fit us in for two sessions per week over the summer. We have had 10 sessions with Pam. My daughter is starting a new school and we wanted Pam to help with the transition from the current math program to our new school's math program. My daughter can get anxious about math so we were looking for Pam to both teach her new skills, as well as bolster her confidence. Pam succeeded in doing both. Pam was always on time for lessons and never ended early. She and my daughter worked diligently through each lesson, working through sample problems. Pam assigned a few problems from the book for our daughter to do at home and then checked them at the next lesson. We are very satisfied with Pam and would love to continue with her this fall. She is patient, kind, skilled at math, and thorough in her explanations. When I asked my daughter to say a few things about Pam, she texted me: "Yea, she's very helpful and includes detailed organized notes to take home and look back at. Very thorough and makes sure you understand everything before she moves to the next topic." As a family, we could not be happier with Pam's help this summer and would recommend her highly to anyone else looking for support in math.
Pamela's step-wise, systemic approach to reviewing past topics and introducing new math subjects is right on target. Pamela's experience is a math teacher/tutor is clear and her skills and tutoring process will certainly translate into an excellent fit for our rising 8th grader.
Pamela has been excellent with my son. She is very knowledgeable on various Algebra methods and relates well with teenagers.
Pam is an excellent tutor. My son is very shy and he is very comfortable with her. since he has been with her he is receiving good grades on his tests. she comes well prepared each week and knows what he is working on. I would definately recommend her to anyone
we went over pre algebra, algebra and some fractions over the course of 3 weeks. She is very knowledgeable and I highly recommend her for tutoring sessions.
Pamela is wonderful!!!!
She has been here 100% for my son & I , she has helped him tremendously !! We are grateful to have her & she is also very kind & and sweet at all
Times & communicates & helps me with my concerns!
Pam is amazingly patient with my children. She takes time to listen as well as observe demonstrated skills so she can continue the lesson in a manner that builds confidence and memory. Both of my children have improved in confidence which has shown in test scores.
When we initially contacted Pamela she responded very promptly and was willing to meet with our son that day to assist him with preparation for his upcoming test in Honors Algebra 2. He went from almost failing the first marking period to almost obtaining an "A-" in the second marking period.
He began meeting with Pamela 2x a week the first month and now meets 1x a week. Pamela has been very flexible and willing to move our tutoring time/day so that our son's tutoring session aligns with our son's exam schedule(so his tutoring session is before the exam -- not after). She has often been able to do this on short notice and this has been a huge help since you often don't know in advance when a test is being given in H.S.
As the third marking period is beginning, our son has a 97 average. Although he may not be able to maintain that high average he has made significant improvement. He is understanding the material and has more confidence. From the beginning he felt comfortable working with Pamela. Our son has reported that Pamela has made difficult concepts he was struggling with, understandable. He has said things like, "Now I get it." "I understand how to do the problem."
I highly recommend Pamela.
Pamela is a wonderful tutor. She is very helpful, and knows how to make the lessons exciting and comfortable. Thanks for helping me through this!
Pam was outstanding in diagnosing my daughter's needs and offered specific assistance in getting her through a concentrated summer Calculus course. We didn't call Pam until the class was half way over - Pam sized up the situation and helped my daughter get through a difficult class. Thanks Pam for the help.
Pamela K. is an excellent tutor. She is very knowledgeable and is very good at explaining and teaching mathematical concepts in a clear and understandable way. She is very patient and easy to reach.
Pam is helping my son with calculus. She is punctual and patient. My son has raised his SAT math score 80 points since working with Pam. I would highly recommend her service.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra 1 often challenges student's ideas of what math is all about, and the new ways of approaching math can seem overwhelming. I have tutored many students in algebra 1 as well as college level algebra classes, and have seen my students gain confidence as they begin to understand algebraic techniques, tools, and concepts. I will focus on addressing your individual needs and will help you build a solid foundation for moving forward in your study of math.
I have over five years of experience tutoring students in high school level algebra 2 classes and college algebra classes. Algebra 2 classes introduce many higher level math concepts that can throw students off at first. I know that each student is different, so I will work with you to help you build your understanding of the subject and strengthen your individual areas of weakness.
Calculus is one of my favorite subjects to tutor, because it opens up a whole new world in math for students to explore. While I was completing my master's degree in math, I worked as a teaching assistant for all levels in the typical college-level calculus sequence (Calculus I, II, and III). Since then, I have helped students succeed in AP Calculus classes as well as college level calculus classes.
As a math tutor, I have a few years of experience successfully helping students who needed a little extra help preparing for the quantitative portion of the GRE. I have helped students brush up on their math skills and learn new skills in order to be successful on the quantitative sections of the GRE.
I am not an English tutor and I have never tutored for the verbal sections of the GRE. However, in August 2017 I retook the GRE and scored a 170 on both the quantitative and the verbal portions of the test. My writing score was 4.5. Based on my own experience taking the test, I believe that I could give you some helpful advice on how to successfully study for the verbal and writing portions of the test.
I have a master's degree in math, and I took the Praxis II Mathematics: Content Knowledge exam in May, 2013. I received a Certificate of Excellence for my score on the exam. I have also successfully helped clients prepare to take the Praxis I or Praxis Core test in mathematics.
Pre-algebra has become one of my favorite levels of math to tutor. As students begin seeing more and more algebraic concepts introduced in math class, it can be overwhelming and frustrating. I love helping students overcome these hurdles and discover new ways of thinking about math as they transition from arithmetic to algebra.
Precalculus classes often include a lot of trigonometry, as well as an in-depth exploration of different types of functions in order to prepare students to study calculus. Gaining a solid understanding of these concepts now will help you succeed in your studies of math in the future. I have experience tutoring in both pre-calculus and calculus, and can help you build a solid mathematical foundation for when you go on to study calculus and beyond.
