Hello students. I enjoy meeting new students of all ages who want to succeed. I teach High School Chemistry, Math for ages 5-adult and have helped students with Dyslexia, Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, ADHD, Asperger's, etc. I provide Home School support and assessments and support for many kinds of Learning Disabilities.
I have been involved in teaching and tutoring for more than 30 years, have an AA in Math, BS, MS in Educational Psychology, and a Learning Disabilities Credential. I write documentations/recommendations/accommodations for students with Learning Disabilities. I look forward to meeting you, determining what you may need to find success and participating in that process in any way I can. I have after school hours available at my home office in Lakewood, WA. If assessment and lesson preparation time is required to meet student needs, tutor's hours will be charged at same rates, as per student agreements signed at lessons.
Joyce is really great at adapting lessons to meet my son's needs. She works at his pace and finds ways to convey the information to him in a manner in which he can understand the material. Her patience and love for kids is evident.
Helped with finals, and my son seemed to work motive in class drastically due to Joyce's lessons and the time she gave up. Thank you Joyce for the effort you put in to have my son improve.

This was the first day, but she was warm and friendly. My son was comfortable with her, and she was knowledgeable with the area of math he is currently working. So, again, this was the first day.

I have asked many of my friends for help including my two past professors, none of them are able to "communicate" to a level where I "understand". It is amazing. 6 months with my two professors and nothing but frustration & confusion. In the very short time I have spent with Joyce I am miles past where I was stuck in such a short time. Joyce creates an environment that allows my child to truly grasp concepts that she does not get in school. Joyce offers new ideas, and sits one on one with her to make sure she offers any support needed. She has a special way with her students. We are blessed to have her in the journey of high school.

My son and daughter both enjoyed studying with Mrs. Joyce. My son said: "Mrs. Joyce is best tutor ever," even though this is his first time being tutored. My daughter said: "Mrs. Joyce is really nice and patient. I like her." It is really important that my kids feel a connection with their daughter. That will help them feel comfortable studying with her.
I needed some help with math, I have been having a hard time understanding written problems, she taught me step by step how solve those problems. She made sure I understood those math problems and we practiced them so I knew exactly how to solve them.
Joyce is a wonderful teacher who explained difficult material to our daughter; she is knowledgeable about learning disorders. She inspired our daughter to focus on her schoolwork with fresh interest. We initially hired Joyce to work with our daughter over Christmas break, but we plan to continue with Joyce through the academic year.
Joyce was extremely help and a great tutor for my daughter. She explained Chemistry and Algebra in a way that it would be easier to understand.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Algebra skills include understanding how signed numbers work in equations, what graphs look like,and how to factor polynomials. Each of these key concepts are foundational to variations seen in Algebra I; they also provide the background for advancement into higher levels of Algebra and beyond. I have different materials for different types of learners, and working with a tutor helps erase any fear of algebra that may come with this new territory.
I have taught Algebra 2 for more than 10 years to small groups of students. They usually find that they are well prepared for the college entry tests, and are able to retain their algebra skills well. Often college students need a review in order to pass this level of math, and I have materials (college work texts) available to support this process.
I teach home school Chemistry and have tutored Chemistry for more than 10 years. Students usually have high success rates when we work together, and have found this great preparation for College Chemistry
I have been tutoring Elementary students for over 20 years. I can work with students who are learning basics of math, reading and writing, as well as students who struggle to master those basic skills. I give assistance to students with Dyslexia, Dysgraphia and Dyscalculia, as well as work with students with difficulty paying attention. Recommended methods use multisensory methods- especially hands-on and interactive support.
I have assisted students in the Elementary age group with Math skills from Grades 1-8. Topics include regrouping for addition and subtraction, strategies for times tables and fractions, understanding decimals, percentiles, elementary statistics and geometry, and pre-algebra. I can also assist advanced students with high school type math topics.
Individuals who have learned general information about Science and History, who have mastered math concepts (with and without a calculator) and those who can use reading comprehension skills are good candidates for the GED. After working with the students taking this test, I have a renewed appreciation for the effort needed and knowledge and skills it assesses.
Geometry is best taught working from hands on examples to generalizations. Knowing basic Algebra is a plus. Use the Pythagorean theorem and the coordinate plane to understand why the Geometric theorems work.
The GRE test often seems daunting to students in college; however, when students become familiar with the format changes and learn to manage the extra level of complexity, they often find that the math tasks themselves are within their capabilities. Good preparation requires strong math skills, preparation with the specific formats and practice using time management skills.
Prealgebra skills begin with review of all prior skills and recognizing how these patterns work with variables. Success in this area leads to success in Algebra class. I can share visual versions of concepts that may initially seem difficult for students, and give them the confidence to approach the world of "numbers and letters" with confidence.
Students benefit from taking the PSAT to help them understand test formats for SAT. It is also valuable tool for advanced students who seek scholarships and academic recognition. One of my students received a full scholarship based on his PSAT scores.
Reading support comes in many forms: sometimes students haven't made the basic sound-symbol associations needed to read; other times, they need to learn basic sight words or build fluency based on well learned patterns. Still other time, grammar patterns and changes are difficult. Lastly, reading comprehension skills and vocabulary skills play a big part in successfully navigating the reading tasks. I have worked with new learners, students with dyslexic patterns and advanced students in reading skills.
I have taught SAT prep classes for several years, and find that the SAT challenges students to use several types of Math knowledge in new and innovative ways. Familiarity with different test formats comes from a thorough academic preparation as well as practice with this test format. Students who are taught to "think" like SAT test creators are most successful on this test.
