Bio

My name is Alyssa, and I am a graduate from Central Washington University with my Bachelors degree in elementary education. I am currently on my second year of maternity leave from the Olympia School District, where I taught 5th grade for five years! I’ve also spent time in kindergarten and 3rd grade classrooms. I teach all subjects, but math is one of my favorites. Teaching has really opened my eyes to the excitement behind problem solving in math, I hated it as a child! My other passion is...

My other passion is for reading. While I love the problem solving aspect of math, nothing compares to reading a good book.

I spent half a year teaching via distance learning (March 2020 - June 2020). While this was not an exceptionally long time, we teachers are quick learners! I feel confident that I can help your student via distance learning if that is your preference!

I swam on a competitive swim team from 8 years old to 18 years old, and played water polo through college. I started teaching swimming lessons at 15 years old, and I have worked with children ages 4-15. I have taught very basic lessons, all the way up to a mini swim team where I focused more on technique. I'm comfortable teaching people of any age or ability swim lessons, as it is something I have spent most of my life doing.

I love technology and can teach children, teenagers, or adults the secrets behind using spreadsheets, formatting word documents, creating PowerPoints and more!

I’m a little quirky, and I’d like to think that most of my students love me for my exuberance. I feel confident that I can help your student not only succeed, but find a love for learning!

*I am fully vaccinated, and participate in social distancing and mask wearing. Because my son is not old enough to be vaccinated (he just turned one!) I will request mask wearing during tutoring sessions (unless you want to get really creative, maybe we could make outdoor distance learning work!?). Thank you so much for your understanding.

Elementary Education

Elementary (K-6th)

I have spent the past 2 years studying elementary education at Central Washington University. I will be graduating in June with my Bachelors in education, as well as my K-8 certification. Starting at the end of March I will begin my student teaching, but I have had plenty of experience in the classroom prior to this. I spent three months working in a 3rd grade classroom in Ellensburg, WA where I worked mostly in small groups or one-on-one tutoring students who were struggling in a specific subject. I also spent three months in a 5th grade class in Ellensburg teaching science to small groups of students. I taught one lesson to a group of five students that rotated daily. The last classroom I worked in, in Ellensburg, was a 6th grade class teaching literacy. I taught two lessons a week for eight weeks to a group of five 6th graders. These lessons were all focused on one specific part of literacy. In August I went to Honduras and spent three weeks teaching English to students in private and public elementary schools. This was a wonderful experience and I learned a lot about teaching English, especially since I speak very little Spanish.

Swimming

Swimming

I started swimming competitively when I was 8 years old, and didn't stop until mid way through high school. The competitive swim team I was on practiced for 2.5 hours every weekday during the school year, and 4.5 hours every weekday during the summer. I also swam on the swim team at my high school where I made varsity all four years, and was team captain for two years. I went to districts all four years, and held the school record for the 500yd freestyle for 6 years. At 15, I began working as a lifeguard/swim instructor for Lacey Parks & Rec. After 6 years of being there I still love teaching swimming lessons. I have taught swimmers from the ages of 3 to 15. I have taught all of the strokes, ranging from the basics of front/back crawl, up to the specifics of butterfly. I have worked with beginning swimmers who are trying to get over a fear of water, and skilled swimmers who want to focus on technique and endurance. For two summers I coached the Lacey Parks (non-competitive) swim team, which had swimmers ages 8-16. I'm now a parks and recreation manager, and train new instructors on teaching swimming lessons.
