Hi! I’m Laura and I love math and science. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and a Master’s in Applied Physics. I am now retired after a long career as a physicist and engineer. Hi! I’m Laura and I love math and science. I have a Bachelor’s degree in Physics and a Master’s in Applied Physics. I am now retired after a long career as a physicist and engineer. You could say I have been a women in STEM since long before the acronym was created!! As a student, I loved Math and fell even more in love with Physics when I realized how math can be used in science to understand the world around us.

Unlike other subjects, Math and Physics are not based on memorization but on understand the basic principles and methods. As a tutor I will use real world examples to help the student see the underlying concepts and processes. I tutored student athletes in college and my son as he took his preparatory classes for his Biochemistry degree. While working with him, I realized that many fields require good grades in upper math or physics as a perquisite and that tutoring these students would be particularly rewarding.

My approach to Math tutoring will be to show real world examples whenever possible. I believe being able to visualize and understand the meaning of each step of a problem will allow you to correct errors along the way. I also will emphasize how to check your answers and catch typos that can eat away at your final score. I help the student develop a system for approaching story problems.

My favorite Physics professor instilled in his students that Physics was easier than Math because each step in solving the math had to make physical sense. As a tutor I will use this symbiosis between Math and Physics to help the student reach the correct result. I will also encourage my students to consider similar problems with caring known variables as this is often the difference between a “B” and an “A” on a test.

I am looking forward to meeting my students. With many classes becoming virtual, I believe the important one-on-one time with a teacher is missing and this is where a tutor can really help. I am free most late afternoons and evenings. We can meet at your house in a quie
