About Mai

I learn to improve myself; I teach to help others improve themselves. With many years of graphic design and technology experience, BA degrees in Illustration and Asian Humanities, and a certificate in Bookbinding under my belt, I have taught a variety of people (elementary school students to retired professional adults) on a variety of subjects--hands-on art, general computer programs, and some art-related specialized computer programs.

For hands-on art, I teach the application of foundational art theories (composition, contrast, colors, etc.) using various tools, such as charcoal, pen and ink, pastels, acrylic paint, and other mediums.

General computer programs that I tutor includes Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, email services (Gmail, Yahoo!, Microsoft), as well as how to use peripherals attached to your computer (scanner, printer, iPhone, USB drive, external hard drive).

Specialized programs that I tutor includes Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, FTP programs, and website services (GoDaddy, Weebly). I am also knowledgeable in some website coding languages (HTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL).

Before starting the first lesson, please share what you (or your child) know about the subject matter. I want to make sure we're a good fit, so that each lesson will be efficient, expanding on what the student knows; so that when we're done, they will confidently succeed on their own.

Depending on the subject matter and time frame, I may give assignments that would help the student review and practice what was taught in the lesson on their own.

I am generally available to teach between 9 AM and 6 PM from Monday to Saturday, preferably at a library, cafe, or online. For online tutoring, I can teach after 6 PM (PST) if needed. Feel free contact me as my schedule fluctuates every week due to jobs outside of WyzAnt. And please note that I am open to negotiations, especially if your situation is unique, such as group sessions.

Thank you for your interest and I look forward to teaching you!

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Adobe InDesign

Since I first started using Adobe InDesign in 2007, I have created a variety of documents for print and/or digital distribution, such as business cards, building banners, window posters, postcards, forms, brochures, and more.

When I worked as a marketing manager and graphic designer at a commercial real estate firm in San Francisco, I created over 250 real estate fliers in a span of about four years. I am familiar with character styles, paragraph styles, working with and creating INDT files, in addition to color and design theories (learned in art school) that make a document functional and aesthetically pleasing with the client's specifications.

Drawing

I graduated from the Academy of Art (San Francisco, California) with a BA in Illustration, in 2007. I have experience drawing with various tools: pen and ink, charcoal, paint, pastels, markers, digitally with a Wacom pen and tablet, and more. I can draw from live models, from photo references, and even outdoors on location.

Rather than focusing too much on book knowledge, as art theory can get overwhelming, I believe the student can gain practical knowledge from hands-on experience. To start, the student would do charcoal drawings of still life or of a live model; this would help them gain hand-eye coordination and accuracy, teach their brain to break down what they see into lines and simple shapes, and learn about the importance of negative and positive spaces.

Dreamweaver

I have been learning to design and produce websites since 1997, and started using Dreamweaver in 2000. I can hand-code websites in HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. I've been freelancing as a web designer / developer since 2003. The most recent site I worked on using Dreamweaver is kirimachi.com as the designer and developer.

Graphic Design

My artistic knowledge and skills have been set at the Academy of Art University (San Francisco, California), where they place heavy emphasis on learning color and design theories and building drawing skills.

I have worked as a marketing manager and graphic designer at a San Francisco commercial real estate firm for four years. There, I've created brochures, 250+ fliers, postcards, business cards, and more. And I have been a freelance graphic designer since 2007.

Macintosh

I have been using Macintosh computers for more than 10 years. I can help troubleshoot basic issues and connect a Mac computer to printers, scanners, LAN, WLAN, etc. I can show people how to install and delete applications, close frozen applications, how to reset the PRAM, show/hide files and file extensions, handy finger shortcuts with taps and swipes (if using a MacBook), and more.

Microsoft Outlook

I can setup email accounts that are from Microsoft Exchange, Gmail, Yahoo!, Hotmail, or personal domain names. I can show how the student can setup emails to be fetched using POP or IMAP servers, and the difference between each type of server. While working at a commercial real estate company for four years, I was the go-to person for setting up the emails on Microsoft Outlook, answering all email-related questions, and troubleshooting email issues related to Outlook, email content, and/or our third-party email provider.

Web Design

I have been learning to design and produce websites since 1997, and started using Dreamweaver in 2000. I can hand-code websites in HTML, CSS, PHP, and MySQL. I've been freelancing as a web designer / developer since 2003. The most recent sites I worked on are kirimachi.com (as the designer and developer), luxorcouture.com (with a team member using Joomla!), and kfischerrealestate.com (quick site using Weebly).
