About Stephanie

I have been tutoring all ages (4th grade through adult) for almost eight years now. I have familiarity with the IB Math and Chemistry programs having successfully tutored students at Skyline HS. I specialize in giving struggling students the skills to be successful in the classroom.

By far, my favorite subjects are math and science, but I love to show the tricks for test taking for ASVAB, TEAS, MCAT, Compass / Accuplacer / WAMAP placement tests, new SAT and ACT exam. I specialize in identifying the roadblocks to your success and getting you to your goal. I can also help students understand their style of learning and assist with study skills.

My philosophy in tutoring is to build confidence and academic proficiency so I can release the student.

I do tutor students who contract with me directly as well so please understand that the hours of availability on Wyzant give general tutoring work hours. Please contact me for current session dates and times that are open for new students!

I look forward to working with you and seeing you succeed.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

I worked for Microsoft, Safeco and PACCAR from 1994-2008. My primary role during that time was as a project manager, program manager, and project consultant for the PMO. As a part of my job, I had to create documents that outlined a project, its resource needs, risks, and managed the schedule plus the resources and issues. I understand ROI (return on investment) and have helped train many project managers, directors and senior directors in project management as well as putting technical terms (from IT) into basic business language to communicate to the customers the benefits and costs of completing a project or program. I also helped create and run a piano tuning business for my husband including doing the marketing and accounting books. I was the President of the Seattle Philharmonic board of trustees from 1993-1995 rebuilding the business side of the orchestra including writing and receiving grant monies for new programs that benefited the needy in our community.

I've played clarinet since the age of 9, won awards at the Kingco Conference Solo Ensemble Contests and performed at two State solo competitions. In addition, I played for the Seattle Youth Symphony and represented our state in the Northwest Band and then orchestra, as well as the John Philip Sousa Band.

Although I did not pursue music as a major at the UW, I did go on to be the clarinet teacher at a music academy in Issaquah for over 5 years. I have taught privately for almost 20 years.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have four children ages: 5-15 and have tutored similar ages for the past few years. From learning shapes, colors, letters and numbers to learning simple addition and subtraction, I have some experience with montessori methods using manipulatives and other objects to help teach the younger elementary school age all that they need to build on in the upper elementary ages. I also have taught 4-6th graders so I am familiar with the building approach for English / Grammar, Math, Sciences and Social Studies.

After leaving the University of Washington with my Bachelors of Science, I decided to go back to take the MCAT test and prepare for entrance into medical school. I took the test twice and enrolled in the Kaplan prep class for the MCAT as well.

Microsoft Outlook

I have been using MS Outlook since 1991. As a project manager, I used this program to send email communications to my sponsors and other stakeholders on the project. I also used it to take votes for post project parties and tracking invitations to meetings. This is a powerful tool that I can help you use more of!

Microsoft Project

As a project manager for over 12 years, MS Project was my tracking tool of choice. I could write macros, print out different reports depending on my audience and of course, use it to capture all information that I needed regarding time and budget on my project.

Microsoft Publisher

I love publisher for the quick newsletters, marketing pieces, and more. I have used this application since 1995. It is one of my favorites. If you need help getting it to do what you need, let me know. I can help!

I have been a soccer coach with Covington Community sports since 2008. When I was young, I played select soccer for 6 years before I had a knee injury which took me out of the game. I also won soccer skills contests sponsored through Coca Cola in my age group (first place local and third place in the state).

Now, I love to coach. I encourage while giving the players new opportunities to try skills in teamwork and individual soccer skills as well.

Study Skills

Study skills are essential for any student not only for their present academic career but also for college and work.

I have been working with middle school and high school students on specific study skills, like goal setting, organization, reading comprehension, listening skills, and more since 2010. These skills are essential to success now and into college and work.

Voice (Music)

I am an accomplished vocalist who has been teaching voice lessons during the past four years. I was a vocalist with the Northwest Gospel Jazz band for 5 years. I have also been performing at weddings for the past 20 years.
I do stress proper warmups and warmdowns as well as voice strengthening exercises. I also want my students to know how to read notes. In addition, we work on ear training to ensure pitch is right where it should be.

The only tutor to choose!!!

Where do I begin? My son Alex is highly capable, and has very lofty goals. He took his SAT and ACT on his own without tutoring or even having entered his junior year of high school (thereby not having had many of the classes) and did respectably. He wanted better, because he wants the most options when choosing a college. We were recommended to Stephanie from another of her students and signed up.
