About Ana

Hello everyone! My name is Ana M. and I am a senior at Western Washington University. I am a Linguistics and Japanese double major and French and ESL double minor. I also plan on furthering my education into graduate school to receive a Masters and quite possibly a Doctorate.
I have over 1,500 hours of both paid and volunteer teaching/tutoring experience in English, ESL/EFL/ELL, Math (pre-algebra, algebra 1), and Japanese. I am a learner-centered tutor which means that I tailor all of my lessons to create a personalized curriculum for each of my students.
I have been a language learner for over 8 years and have also spent a year studying abroad in Tokyo, Japan. Because of this, I have a unique ability to understand the daily struggle students face. I love teaching and I hope that I am able to change the academic life of your student. Cheers. Ana

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have completed math classes through college level calculus and have received high grades in all of the classes I have taken. I have also tutored multiple people in math including middle school, high school and university students. I feel very confident in my Algebra 1 skills and in my ability to teach the subject.

Algebra 2

I have taken advanced math classes all the way through school including college level algebra 2, precalculus and calculus. I also have extensive experience in tutoring math as I have worked with many people including my siblings; elementary, middle, and high school students; fellow classmates; and college students. I love math and it is one of my favorite subjects to teach.

English

As a high school student, I spent a large portion of my senior year as a TA. I was lucky enough to be paired with my AP English Language teacher from the year before and was placed in her freshman English class. As a former student of hers, she knew how I wrote and analyzed literature, and as a result, I was moved into a more tutor like role. Whereas most TAs solely focus on housekeeping activities such as grading tests and entering scores into the gradebook, I spent my time helping students with their essays, working with them on understanding Shakespeare, editing papers, and on occasion even teaching part of the class. English has always been the subject in which I excelled the most and it is also a subject that I feel very comfortable teaching. I have logged over 1,500 hours as a classroom volunteer with ESL students at Western Washington University, as well as tutoring native English speakers.

ESL/ESOL

As a student at Western Washington University, I have logged over 450 hours with the Asia University America Program. As a part of my volunteer work, I tutor Japanese foreign exchange students in a variety of English subjects. Apart from these experiences, I am studying to earn my teaching credentials in ESL. I have also spent a lot of time tutoring younger students, including my younger siblings, family friends, and freshman in high school.

Japanese

I have been studying Japanese for three years, a year of which was spent in intensive language classes at Asia University in Tokyo, Japan. I am very comfortable teaching conversation skills, grammar, reading, and basic writing, as well as being a conversation partner for my students. I have over 1,500 hours of both paid and volunteer language tutoring.

Microsoft Publisher

As a student for the past 17 years, I have used Microsoft Publisher at various stages of my academic career. I was taught how to use it by a computer scientist and Microsoft employee. I have used to to do anything from making brochures, to posters, graphs, charts, flyers, project information documents, and more. I am very comfortable with using it for just about anything.

Understanding

I'm very pleased with Ana's ability to relate to my granddaughter on her level. My granddaughter really feels she has learned a lot already with just a few sessions. She also feels very confident working with Ana! She enjoys her sessions.
