About Dan

I have a B.A. in Geology/Geophysics; M.S. in Remote Sensing/GIS/Geography; M.A. in Teaching; and a Professional Teaching Certificate with endorsements in Science, Earth Science, and Mathematics. I am in my tenth year teaching the STEM subjects at both the middle and high school level, after a 17-year successful first career in mapping technology, having served as an Application Specialist, Program Manager, and Product Unit Manager.

Highlights of my time spent in the classroom include, effectively raising the bar for all students by delivering engaging lessons and taking a student-centered, results-oriented approach to assessing performance. I bring my real-life experience and practical competence in diverse environments to the classroom, and have developed an outstanding rapport with students/families, and colleagues. I have direct success as a classroom teacher, and online mentor, in private, parochial, and public schools.

I established connections with local charities to enable student community service projects and initiated a grassroots effort for school-wide organics recycling/food waste composting. During the summer, I continue to teach as a summer high school science teacher for Issaquah District 411; I have taught high school Physical Science and Chemistry, and most recently, was asked to be part of a pilot plan for online mentoring during the summer program. This experience provided me with a great look at where public education is headed.

On a personal level, I enjoy “Air” - have been known to skydive, paraglide, and bungee-jump; “Water” - was a River Guide at one point; and “Land” – enjoy mountaineering, hiking, camping, and cycling.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
