About Susan

Hi!

My name is Susan, and I'm an honors undergraduate of Cal State, Hayward, CA, with a Master of Fine Arts in Writing from University of San Francisco. I hold a specialization in teaching writing. I am currently finishing my Ph.D. in Psychology.

Besides being a English tutor for many years, I'm also a college instructor and Strategies for Success Coach, helping those with the most basic English skills in their first years of college. I have the experience, background, and knowledge to help your student with all aspects of reading, writing, and literature, including grammar, comprehension, and editing for content. I'm also approved to teach elementary-level math and can help with test prep (the TOEFL, GRE, SAT, and AP exams).

I enjoy working with students of all ages. The individuality of each student is amazing, and I work hard to understand what methods will bring about the best results. Most of all, students should enjoy the learning process!

I look forward to working with you and your students.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

CBEST

I have taken the CBEST and passed with an almost perfect score. I'm approved as a sub, with emergency credential qualifications, and understand how the exam works. If students need course materials, I have study guides, notes and CDs that I'd be happy to share.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have a K-12 California emergency credential, and have applied to be a local sub. I've taught in the private school setting -- students ranging from pre-K to 8th grade.

In addition, I successfully home-schooled my two kids, from Kindergarten to 9th grade -- my daughter got accepted to top colleges this year, and will attend UCSC for chemistry.

I'm currently tutoring several younger students, specifically a 5th grader, in all elementary subjects.

Study Skills

I assisted in the development and implementation of Skills for Success for Argosy University, a class designed to provide students with skills needed their entire college careers and beyond. These skills include: reading for comprehension, vocabulary building, goal-setting,
time management strategies, note-taking tools, and technology applications.

Since the class was developed, I teach it on a rotating basis, using Feldman's Power of Learning as a text.

reviewed and encouraged granddaughter. Very pleasant Granddaughter responded very well to her style. Loved it. Soft spoken, asked questions in a way that our granddaughter was open to responding.
