I love helping people reach their full potential and learn the many ways of learning that do not stereotype each individual student. It has been my pleasure to work with several hundred students by improving their test scores, and grades, but more importantly to help them build their self-confidence to reach their ultimate potential.
I worked for 7 years as a special education assistant, specializing in children with ADD and dyslexia. I also homeschooled my four sons till middle school. I graduated with my BA in Health and Wellness in July of 2012. I maintained a 4.0 grade point average while working full-time. I am also a Certified Holistic Life Coach.
I've used my research and knowledge in helping not only my son and other students but also my husband to realize that dyslexia is a gift. If it were not for this special gift of dyslexia we would not have most of our explorers, inventors, and scientists.
If you choose me as a tutor, you will be getting a very compassionate person. I am passionate about learning and the importance in teaching students to have a love of learning beyond the four walls of their school. Learning is life and life is learning. Let's keep learning fun. I love helping people reach their full potential and learn the many ways of learning that do not stereotype each individual student. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I was a certified special education assistant for 7 years focusing on sensory processing disorders as well as ADD and ADHD. I also home-schooled my own son who has ADD and ADHD. Since the degree of ADD and ADHD are different for each student, I tailor my tutoring methods to meet the needs of each student. ADD and ADHD students need to see the big picture and answer the all important question of "Why?" I help them see why we need to do a task and how it will help them in the future.
I taught Bible Studies to a multi-aged Children's group for seven years. The youngest in the group was three and the oldest was 11. I taught them through hands-on projects. The subjects included the Days of Creation, stories of Noah, Moses, Joseph, Josiah, Mary, Jesus, Peter, Paul, Abraham, Issac, Jacob, and many others. I also covered the big events from the Bible: The Flood, Noah's Ark, Crossing the Red Sea, Sermon on the Mount and others.
I've entered several cooking contests and written many of my own recipes. I've cooked professionally in my brother's restaurant when I was a teenager. I've taken many different cooking and nutrition classes in college where I learned how to prepare balanced meals for different health issues.
I have worked in special education for over 10 years, specializing in students with dyslexia. I also have a husband and a son with dyslexia that I home schooled for a time. I take a multifaceted approach to helping students and people with this issue because dyslexia is as unique as the person.
I worked in co-teaching (K-6th) for over 10 years. Teaching students in Art, Science, Health, Reading, Math, Social Studies, Music. I also homeschooled my own 4 sons for many years. I well versed in the protocol in the many teaching styles and understand that each student is different and requires tutors to adapt to each one.
Elementary Math is more than just adding and subtracting numbers. When a child learns how to compare, describe, sort, measure they begin to look at the world differently. As students progress through the process of Elementary Math they begin to understand a little of how their world works.
I've been crocheting since I was 5, designing my first sweater when I was 10. I am an avid crocheter and have taught classes to grade and middle school students as well as adults.
I graduated with a BA in Health & Wellness with a minor in nutrition. I'm currently working on my certification as a holistic nutritional counselor. I excel at focusing on our nutritional guidelines while maintaining health and well-being.
I've used phonics to teach my own sons how to read as well as when I worked in as a special education assistant for 10 years. Teaching the sounds of letters is vitally important in knowing how to pronounce words and eventually string those words together and read. I also use phonics as a tool when tutoring dyslexia students.
My mom taught me how to sew when I was six years old. My aunt then taught me how to make patterns from existing clothing without taking apart the clothing when I was 10. I've been designing my own clothing since I was 12. I make most of my own clothing today since I always have to alter clothing that I purchase because I have one hip higher than the other.
