Hello. I have been a teacher for over 30 years, working in high schools, middle schools, elementary schools and adult ESL/ELL and GED programs. It is a joy to be a classroom teacher, but working one-on-one offers the opportunity to meet a student's needs more effectively, precisely and quickly. That is very rewarding.
I have lived in Germany, Austria and Japan. I love taking the grandchildren to parks, museums and the zoo. Reading history, The New York Times and The Christian Science Monitor, and trail running and hiking in the mountains are ways I enjoy spending my time on my own. My wife and I enjoy traveling and watching good movies. I have a good sense of humor, I am patient and I explain things well. I am flexible and pride myself on understanding and meeting students' needs, coaching them to grow as learners and people, and making them feel and be successful.
I have an MBA and love teaching math. As a 6th-grade teacher for the past eight years, I taught students at all ability levels. Math is solving puzzles, and it's fun, successful and rewarding if we teach it the right way.
I have a Master's degree in Teaching ESL/ESOL and I've taught ESL for over 20 years to middle-school students, high-school students and adults. As a middle-school and elementary-school teacher for the past 20 years, I know the needs, abilities and potential of these students. Having lived in Europe and Asia, I know what it's like to live, work and go to school where one has to learn another language. In my case, German and Japanese.
I encourage you to see if we are a good fit. I will not charge for a session the student and parent are not both happy with. Hello. In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
