One of the things I love most in life is helping others to succeed.
I have educated, tutored and taught many people from diverse backgrounds, from all ages for the past 30 years on a voluntary basis in numerous subjects and areas including English as a second language, math, reading and writing. A life and career transition has brought me to Wyzant.
My primary focus when tutoring is the student's individual needs and challenges. I have tutored and taught all ages from children as young as 6 years to adults over age 50. I consider myself a patient and compassionate person and I work hard at being an open, honest communicator. I have a knack for creative problem-solving, thinking outside the box, and believing that anything is possible with patience, the right attitude and work ethic. I am intuitive and incorporate modalities such as mindfulness and meditation and strive to create a relaxed fun atmosphere which is in my opinion, crucial to a positive learning experience. My success depends on my students' success.
I was born in Germany and moved here at age 7 so I have a good grasp on overcoming the challenges involved with learning English, regardless of your native language.
My education and degrees have offered me many years of focused study and work experience in various fields including science. I have taken the SAT and MCAT and am familiar with the rigorous requirements of standardized testing.
One of my greatest loves in life is music, and I have over ten years formal training in classical piano and voice. I have played and practiced the piano and keyboard for 42 years. I began my studies at age nine. At age thirteen I was being groomed to perform semi-professionally with a local college orchestra, but I had to stop due to some health issues. I spent my teenage years practicing, composing, playing, and performing and very much focusing on developing my voice. I sang with the University of TX Concert Chorale as a freshman. I have had a number of professional piano and vocal instructors with whom I have studied, and I have sung and performed both solo and with multiple choirs. In 2013 I began to sing supporting vocals and play zither and harmonium in a semi-professional kirtan band and had the great pleasure of performing alongside various professional artists for 3 years. This past year I have begun to teach beginning harmonium lessons. I have also begun to study Indian classical music from various professionals, which has been a great joy and privilege for me. My knowledge of music includes sight-reading and basic theory. I continuously strive to improve my skills and knowledge through performance, teaching, and continuing education.
I also love to tutor English, writing, literature, and reading. I have had experience teaching English as a second language to German, Spanish and Chinese-speaking nationals.
My strategy involves assessing your learning and studying styles and addressing your short-term and long-term goals and needs with you to create a workable action plan which will help empower you towards success.
My tutoring style varies but primarily involves going over subject material with you by asking questions and offering simplified and real-world explanations and scenarios, use of visual materials, and attempting to make sure foundational concepts are understood. I ask my students to provide me, in advance, with the topics and any study guides they are currently covering, which will help me to prepare an efficient and focused tutoring session. I strive to address any feelings of tension, anxiety or stress with compassion and gentleness. My students' comfort is important to me.
My formal academic education includes a BA in Biology from the University of TX in Austin; acquired in 1990; and a professional Doctorate of Podiatric Medicine from The California College of Podiatric Medicine, San Francisco, which I acquired in 1997.
German is my native language, so I understand the various challenges associated with learning English as a second language.
I incorporate phonics into my beginning English lessons, and I'm a former trainer with a brain training company called "Learning Rx" which helps children and adults with learning challenges overcome them using creative techniques and exercises.
I currently work part-time for a local publishing company which helps me keep my English grammar and writing skills polished.
Please contact me with any questions! I look forward to meeting you and helping you to achieve your GPA goals and test scores! One of the things I love most in life is helping others to succeed.

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
I have studied 10 years of classical piano and 10 years of classical vocal with private instructors who emphasized ear training as part of the process. I have performed in various choirs, including the University of Texas Concert Chorale. I have maintained my practice of music my entire adult life. In the past few years I have studied with private teachers learning the art of Indian classical music, most recently the Gundecha Brothers who are the leading exponents of Dhrupad, a refined foundational form of Indian classical music. My teaching style incorporates evaluating where a student is in their abilities and to work together a plan for improvement, including a disciplined practice schedule.
I have tutored college level algebra students so elementary math is a subject which is much easier. Please see my qualifications as listed in my profile.
I have formally studied classical piano and voice for over 10 years. I have performed in a variety of private and public venues for piano and voice throughout my life both solo and in a group: choir, ensemble and band. Music theory is important to learn to be able to read music, perform, and compose, and collaborate with others. I teach beginning theory.
My qualifications are 10 years formal training followed by continuing practice and performance throughout my adult life. I have won numerous first placements in yearly National Piano Guild competitions. My teaching methods involve sight reading, theory, technique & exercises, encouraging improvisation, learning a fun piece, and homework. My goal is to always make it fun and interesting.
I have over 10 years of formal training in reading music notation and over 30 years of sight reading vocally which I have utilized in numerous live semi-professional and online vocal performances, including being a member of Disney's World of Color Honor Choir.
