About James

My prior tutoring experience has involved working with students from elementary school to high school in a variety of subjects, both through the National Honors Society of my high school and volunteering in college with youth outreach groups in Upstate New York. My background in the natural and physical sciences, as well as mathematics, has been extensive and I have been fortunate to take many of the AP and SAT II exams while I was in high school, and so I understand how to navigate many of the exam-type questions one could expect from a science teacher or The College Board.

While volunteer tutoring in college, I engaged with 7-15 year old students in an after school program providing assistance with their homework in subjects ranging from reading comprehension to honors biology. I worked extensively with one 14 year old student for several months, providing weekly tutoring in all subjects to help him adjust to the shift of the expectations in producing high school quality homework assignments. Another older student I tutored was preparing for a state high school exam in chemistry, and I spent several weeks in preparation before the exam going over practice exam questions, as well as periodic trends and other helpful hints to insure she would have the tools to succeed on this comprehensive test. Additionally, I have 3 younger siblings (one as young as 12) who I would help with their homework daily at home. I also have experience working with several other high school and college students practicing and studying concepts including protein synthesis, mechanical physics formula application, the mechanisms behind aerobic cellular respiration, and how to use the periodic table of elements to solve chemistry problems.

I hold an undergraduate degree from Cornell University in Ithaca, NY in the biological sciences with a focus on neurobiology. Since relocating to Seattle, I have been studying to return to school and pursue a medical degree. My passion for biology has driven me to undertake several student internships at prestigious research institutions in the New York City area, including studying how viruses subvert the human immune system at Mount Sinai School of Medicine, and studying the effects of inserting the human neurofibromatosis type I gene into fruit flies at New York Medical College. Being fortunate to have applied my knowledge to the scientific method of several research projects, I have further reinforced my understanding of applied chemistry and biology.

I strive to bring a positive attitude and enthusiasm to my tutoring by attempting to draw parallels to relevant experiences in everyday life that may help better explain complex scientific phenomenon, as well as engage the student's interest in the subject matter. My main goals when it comes to tutoring is enabling students to succeed in subjects they find difficult, encouraging them to accept challenges, and reminding them to take problems one step at a time so they can experience the gratification of correctly evaluating a tough test question. I understand the struggles of being a student, and I have the tutoring experience to help you become successful in your studies, and I would utilize each tutoring opportunity to help the student begin to realize their true academic potential. Each student I have worked with has passed their respective courses or exams with the supplemental tutoring assistance provided, and I look forward to working with you/your student as well.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

I have previous experience tutoring algebra 1 to middle and high school children, particularly in NY where high school students prepare for annual state math exams (of which two are cumulative algebra exams). I also volunteer tutored during college for a few semesters at a local middle school, working almost exclusively with students on algebra 1 and science homework problems afterschool.

Geometry

I am currently tutoring a couple of high school students in geometry, and have previously had great success in the subject matter myself both by high school and college assessment standards. Though the material can be difficult to memorize, I have several study techniques that can be employed to help make sense of the formulas and theorems that you will encounter.

Great teaching skill/style. — James was well received by my teen son tonight for his first introductory lesson/meet n greet. James seemed to clearly explain himself and would confirmed with my son that he was tracking with him. If not he'd tweak the lesson in a format my son could relate to. I look forward to seeing my son's growth in math and science this year. Well done James. ...
