I truly have a passion for teaching math, science, and engineering. I have experience working with students of all ages, and teach engineering at a local community college. Top subjects include Basic Math, Prealgebra, Algebra, Trigonometry, Precalculus, Calculus, Intro to Statics and Engineering Problems, Statics, Mechanics of Materials, Dynamics, Engineering Graphics, SolidWorks), and ISEE and SAT test preparation, to name a few.
As I teach and work problems with a student, I also emphasize study skills such as time-management and organization, as well as test taking skills and problem solving strategies. I use my real-world engineering experience to broaden my student's education.
I began tutoring at Western Washington University's Tutorial Center while studying Geology about 17 years ago. After earning a BS in Geology and a MS in Civil Engineering, I worked as a Professional Engineer (PE License current) for 6 years before returning to academia 5 years ago.
I look forward to working with you! Let me help you or your student!

Alison is helping me through Pre-Calc and has been doing a fantastic job! She's patient and makes sure to do her own homework in preparation for the tutoring session, so you can be sure that she's knowledgeable on the subject matter.
We are thoroughly delighted with the tutoring services, organization, patience and guidance Alison is providing to our 7-seven year old son. We have seen a sudden increase not only in his love of math, but in his school work and grades. On his MAP scores he literally went from 67% to 92%, after a few months of tutoring. Alison has been willing to keep the classes 'fresh' but tailor-making the classes to suit his attention levels and skills. I would recommend Alison to any family.
Alison has been very well prepared each time she has tutored my son. She shows up on time, goes right to work and I saw results immediately! My son likes her and therefore wants to please her by doing well. This is the way to get results!
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Students often have a hard time transitioning from using only numbers to using numbers and variables in their math work. I have tutored many students of all ages in algebra, with great results. I begin by showing them how the variables actually represent numbers and go from there. My experience includes tutoring college students who have made their mind up about math and need help overcoming their fears by seeing math as something that they CAN indeed do, and do well.
I am qualified to tutor civil engineering courses based on my education, including a BS in environmental and engineering geology from Western Washington University (WWU) and an MS in engineering with a specialty of geotechnical engineering (a branch of civil engineering) from University of Washington (UW). I worked at WWU's tutorial center, tutoring mathematics, chemistry, physics, and geology. In addition, I was a teaching assistant for several civil engineering courses at the UW, including construction materials, which is a 300 level course that requires knowledge of the basic engineering courses such as statics, mechanics of materials and structural engineering. Lastly, I worked as a consulting engineer at a public firm in Seattle for 6 years.
I have experience tutoring several children between the ages of 6 and 11 in nearly all subjects, including math, reading, vocabulary, history, English, social studies, life science, health, etc. I have a letter of recommendation from the owner of a tutoring agency in Los Angeles that I worked with for 2 years, as well as recommendation letters from two of the childrens' parents.
My tutoring experience includes years of working with elementary, middle and high school students in nearly all subjects. I recently tutored 8th grade students for the Upper Level ISEE exam, and covered material for the Lower and Middle levels as well. I am very familiar with the ERB's testing materials and utilize their guide and online resources as well as the 2013 edition of Cracking the SSAT and ISEE (by The Princeton Review) to plan lessons. References available upon request.
I teach the engineering mechanics series at Shoreline Community College. The series consists of three classes (Statics, Mechanics, and Dynamics), which are the foundation of Mechanical Engineering. I have taught each of these classes 3 times. I also teach an Intro to Statics and Engineering Problems course, Engineering Graphics, and Introduction to Engineering. I am a registered Professional Engineer (Civil), but in WA state, you must pass the test for general engineering first, which is heavy in mechanical engineering content.
