I graduated from Penn State College of Medicine in 2018 and am now a licensed family practice physician. I received my bachelor's degree in biochemistry at the University of Colorado in 2012. I graduated from Penn State College of Medicine in 2018 and am now a licensed family practice physician. I received my bachelor's degree in biochemistry at the University of Colorado in 2012. While becoming a physician has been a lifelong dream now come true, I miss helping people understand mathematical and scientific concepts, build confidence in their abilities to learn materials presented to them, and, ultimately, see students pursue their education goals unhindered.

After taking College Algebra, my instructor asked if I was interested in becoming a tutor. I agreed, figuring it would keep my algebra skills fresh while I took Calculus. I enjoyed seeing "the light bulb turn on" for people who had struggled with and even hated math. Seeing clients realize they could learn math and do well in their classes was highly satisfying. After a few years, I expanded my tutoring to include grade school through college-level students. In total, I tutored students in mathematics from 1999-2006.

When I returned to college in 2008 to complete my degree in biochemistry, I started tutoring classes ranging from General Chemistry and Biology to Analytical Chemistry. Eventually, I became the student Assistant Director of our school's Science Center, working from 2009 - 2013.

I understand that individuals have different learning styles, and I will work with you to find what best suits your learning.

I look forward to hearing from you and helping you to reach your goals.

Algebra 1,

Algebra 1

I have 7 years of experience tutoring Algebra 1. Additionally, I was hired as a substitute teacher, in a private high school, to cover for a math teacher who was going to be out on medical leave for several weeks. The students gave such rave reviews to the school's principal of my teaching style that I was asked to come back anytime a substitute was needed for a math class. They appreciated someone explaining math concepts instead of just babysitting the students.
Algebra 2,

Algebra 2

I tutored college algebra for 7 years. During part of that time I worked as a substitute teacher in both a high school and a grade school, substituting specifically for math and science classes. I strive to discover a student's learning style and teach to that style.
Chemistry,

Chemistry

While completing my BS degree and working on my MS degree in Biochemistry, I worked as a science tutor in my university's science tutoring center for 4 years. Chemistry is one of my favorite subjects to tutor. Chemistry approaches the world in a way no other subject does. It requires learning an entirely new vocabulary, and exploring the world at a molecular level where an incredible amount of action is continually occurring! Two of my goals for students are to become familiar with the language and to learn the why behind what they are being taught, not just memorize "stuff" that means nothing to them.
Prealgebra,

Prealgebra

While working as a college math tutor, I was asked if I was willing to work with students in high school, grade school, and ones preparing to enter college. I gladly expanded the range of math classes I tutored to include Prealgebra. As a tutor, I get to know the math book each student is using. I have found if I understand the approach the author is taking, it allows me to compliment what is being taught. This reduces confusion. Additionally, I ask for details concerning the teachers preferences. Some math teachers are not particular in how a math problem is solved, as long as the steps are provided. Other math teachers want to see the way they taught, and ONLY that way.

Great Tutor!

My son is very comfortable with Mary. She was able to spot his strengths and weaknesses right away and is playing to both!
