About Ashlyn

Hey there! My name is Ashlyn L., and I'd like to share a little bit about my education experiences with you. My family moved a lot while I was growing up so I had a variety of schooling experiences. I went to a private school for K-1st grade and then was home-schooled for a while before going to a charter school for 6th grade. Another move led me back to being home-schooled up until 10th grade, when I attended Olympic College for Running Start. I completed that in two years and graduated at 16 years old with both my high school diploma and Associate of Arts degree. My parents weren’t ready to send me off to university at just 17 years of age, so I took that year off to just work and save money. That year I gained experience as a teacher’s aide for Pre-K to 2nd grade students with Harbor Christian School. Then, in September of 2010, I started Central Washington University in Ellensburg, Washington, and focused on acquiring my Bachelor of Arts degree in music. In three years, I completed the music program and graduated with honors and a steady place on the Dean’s List. That following year I worked as a worship team and music teacher at a local school in Ellensburg and also taught private lessons for piano and voice.

Music has been a strong passion of mine ever since I was little, and I am so incredibly thankful for the opportunities I’ve had to further myself in that field. I continue to grow in my teaching experiences with the various jobs I’ve had that have involved both private and public classroom instruction. In addition to music, I recently completed a course for learning how to teach English to speakers of other languages. I underwent several weeks of hands-on classroom instruction and then traveled to Santiago, Chile, to complete my English teaching practicum with Spanish-speaking students. One of my favorite things about working with internationals is the chance to immerse and educate myself in other cultures. It’s even more rewarding when I get to incorporate music in my teaching practices with them!

With any subject I tutor, I maintain high expectations of my students. I desire to help encourage my students to not settle for mediocre work but to strive to give their best all the time. Along with that comes a good attitude and positive outlook. I have been a student myself for many years, and I understand the pressure and stress of difficult studies. However, I also understand the significance a bad attitude can have on one’s grades and academic success. Mental health is a huge aspect of learner acquisition, and I want my students to understand the real effect that can have on their schooling. Thus, I am a huge fan of affirmations and incorporate it as much as I can within my teachings!

Besides music and international culture, my other interests include cooking, reading, rock climbing, ultimate Frisbee, hiking, and many other outdoor activities and sports. I’m always open to trying new things, and I will eat almost everything (except coconut).

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Bible Studies

During my time at university, I led a Bible study for international students where we just went through a picture Bible and talked about the Gospels and life and significance of Jesus. I have also been in involved in young women's as well as youth ministry where I have participated in administering Biblical and theological studies through both the Old and New Testaments of Scripture. I have worked with a variety of devotionals and study books and have an abundance of resources available.

Composition (Music)

At both community college and university, I studied musical composition and had various writing assignments which included canons, fugues, chorals, and several other pieces which incorporated various theoretical elements. I am a personal songwriter myself and have written over 15 private compositions for both piano and voice. I know how to transcribe and transpose music as well into cohesive compositions in a professional layout.

Ear Training

During all my years of studying music academically, I was immersed in daily ear training techniques! I also have a computer program that aids in ear training by playing melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic dictations. Furthermore, I have different resources that give helpful hints in learning how to relate different musical sounds and phrases to familiar tunes and structures.

General Music

I have studied music ever since I was very young and I graduated with honors as a music major from university. I have worked both privately and publicly as a music instructor for various ages. I am familiar with many different styles as well as their respectable histories. I know and understand the basics of foundational music theory and practice.

Music History

During my time at community college and university, I studied differing musical styles and their histories. These include jazz, opera, classical, folk, contemporary, and theatre. To my own private lessons, I have included general lessons on music history to help aide in their current understanding of their present music studies.

Phonics

With both music and ESL, I have studied phonology extensively. As a vocal major in university, I underwent different dictation classes for the English, Spanish, Italian, German, and French languages. My experiences in singing have practically aided my knowledge of the phonetic alphabet (IPA) and I am able to share this with both my ESL and private voice students.

Piano

I have been playing piano for over 14 years and have been teaching it for over 6 years. I have studied and taught different styles and have worked with beginning, intermediate, and a few advanced students. I teach proper finger technique as well as basic music theory and how it all applies to accurate piano playing.

Sight Singing

During my time at university, I took a course that had the specific purpose of practicing sight-singing. Along with several other music students, I sight-read through numerous unfamiliar choral tunes. In my music theory courses as well as private lessons, I also consistently practiced different sight-singing and solfeggi techniques. I understand sight-singing is very important to improving one's musical ability, so I try to incorporate it as much as I can with my own students!

Songwriting

I am a songwriter myself and have written many different tunes. I have written for not only solo piano but also for piano and voice or multiple voices as well as with the incorporation of other instruments. I also have experience writing choral music, for I studied choral arranging during my time at university. I enjoy teaching how to combine poetic creativity with musical expertise!

Voice (Music)

I have been singing ever since I was very young and I underwent professional voice training at my university. I have been teaching private voice for a little over 3 years now. I have experience with different styles and in all my lessons, I like to include basic theory techniques and phonological studies. Understanding general music theory is very important even to singers!
