About Mark

If you are looking for a tutor in English or the social sciences, you may find my qualifications to be exceptionally suited to your needs.

A graduate of Central Washington University (Ellensburg, WA) with a B.A. in history, I have long had a passion for reading about and researching historical problems. In particular, I have a strong background in European (British, German, Central European, and Russian), Middle Eastern (Ottoman Turkish and Muslim), and American (colonial, Native American, and national) history. However, I have also taken courses in Mexican and Japanese history. The study of history afforded me several important academic benefits, especially the ability to write clear and well-supported arguments and the capacity for critical thinking, benefits that I can pass along to you.

My professional background also has important applications to my being an effective tutor for you. For three years I have held proofing and editing positions with some of the largest-circulation magazines in the United States, including Cat Fancy magazine and the publisher of Entrepreneur magazine. In addition, I wrote articles and reviews for a community magazine for another two years, and I am a published fiction writer. In preparation for these successes, I took a variety of college writing classes, including short fiction and poetry, novel-writing, and screenwriting. As a result of my editorial background, I have a strong command of the fundamentals of English grammar that I currently use for tutoring ESL students.

In tutoring my ESL students, my approach is initially to diagnose the strengths and weaknesses of the student and then to develop lesson plans designed to build up the areas of weakness. I do not believe in criticizing or rushing students when they try to grasp difficult language concepts; rather, I believe that patience and persistence are the best means to achieve optimal results.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

In 2000 I earned a Bachelor's degree in history, after having taken numerous courses in colonial American and U.S. history. Of particular interest for me was the history of the interaction of Native Americans with British colonialism in North America, though I also took seminar-level coursework in the history of the American Revolution. My B.A. thesis concerned American influence on German attempts at reunification during the Nixon Administration of the 1970s.

Astronomy

My focus in astronomy has been on the observational aspects of the science, including naked-eye, binocular, and telescopic observation. I am well-versed in the use of telescopes to observe galactic and extra-galactic phenomena (e.g. multiple stars, nebulae, external galaxies, and planets) and in astronomical photography. I also have a strong working knowledge of the physics related to astronomical objects.

English

I have extensive practical experience using the English language in written form. In addition to having a background as a fiction and non-fiction writer in numerous genres, I worked professionally as a copy editor and an assistant editor for two nationally published magazines. Currently I am a creative writing instructor for Ellensburg Community Schools, and I am writing a fantasy novel.

ESL/ESOL

I have a strong background in both written and spoken English due to my academic experience and my experience tutoring non-native speakers. For more than two years I have worked with numerous students, both online and in person, whose first languages included Spanish, Russian, Farsi, and Mandarin Chinese. This experience has greatly increased my awareness of the the problems faced by ESL/ESOL students and what techniques are most effective in teaching these students.

European History

While completing my academic studies that culminated in my gaining a bachelor's degree in History, I took a large number of courses that focused on European history. The majority of my course work concerned modern German, central European, and Russian history; the topic of my bachelor's thesis was the West German policy of Ostpolitik during the Willy Brandt era. I have also conducted a considerable amount of research on the history of modern British Imperial and Commonwealth history.

Geography

I have a very strong knowledge of geography, both in the U.S. and in the world more generally. My geographical knowledge is largely a product of my academic background in history, for which a grasp of geography is essential. I have also taken university coursework in geography that enhanced my knowledge of related subjects, such as cartography.

Grammar

I have extensive practical experience using the English language in written form. In addition to having a background as a fiction and non-fiction writer in numerous genres, I worked professionally as a copy editor and an assistant editor for two nationally published magazines. As a working writer and as a teacher of creative writing for Ellensburg Community Schools, I have a very strong knowledge of the rules of grammar.

Proofreading

My experience in proofreading includes professional work as a proofreader and a copy editor for a nationally published business magazine in California. I was also the assistant editor of another magazine, for which proofreading was a core job duty. Currently I publish an Internet blog that requires that I proofread and edit submissions that are sent to me by writers who wish to contribute to the blog.

World History

In preparation for receiving a B.A. in History from Central Washington University, I took many courses that enhanced my knowledge of world history. These included the history of such countries as Mexico, Japan, modern Russia, the Muslim Middle East, Germany, and central Europe. My knowledge of world history has also been enhanced by my interest in the history of the British Empire/Commonwealth in the 20th century and earlier.

Writing

My background as a writer includes working for more than a year as a staff writer for a community magazine in Southern California. Since then, I have acquired much additional writing experience as a freelance and creative writer, working in such forms as novels, short stories, poetry, non-fiction articles, and screenplays. Currently I teach a creative writing course for Ellensburg Community Schools that focuses on the improvement of writing skills using in-class critiques.
