About Heidi

I love both learning and teaching, and particularly enjoy working one-on-one and with small groups. It is important to me to have a thorough understanding of each student's background, learning style, and goals so that I can craft the most effective strategies as a tutor. I believe in a holistic approach that takes into consideration the student's emotions, interests, physical needs, family values and social context, as well as academic goals.

I have a BA in Music from the University of Washington, WA state teaching certification in English Language Arts (5-12) and Drama (K-12) from Western Washington University, one year of Waldorf teacher training from the Rudolf Steiner College, and countless other educational experiences. I am happy to provide a resume and updated work experience summary for more details.

I have had a varied career as performer, accompanist, puppeteer, and music director for churches, dance, and theater, and 40 years experience as a private piano teacher. I decided to get my English Language Arts teaching certificate later in life, as I wanted to work with critical thinking skills, values, and creativity through the spoken and written word.

Raising two children to adulthood gave me ample opportunity to experience first hand the challenges of parenting in today's world. I learned a great deal as 4-H leader, church youth group leader, and parent support for Pony Club, soccer, dance and music lessons, Drama Club, animal care, Girl Scouts, etc.

Community, the arts, and nature are very important to me. My current learning endeavors are writing, gardening, photography, and the mysteries of the fungal world. I am a volunteer for the Edmonds Community College ESL program, Mother Mentors, and the NW Language Academy on Whidbey Island, as well as continuing my professional musical activities.

I would be delighted to help you or yours meet your learning goals through individualized and creative tutoring.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a BA in Music from the University of Washington and had many quarters of music theory, as well as private piano theory lessons as a child. I compose and improvise music myself, and improvise music professionally as a dance accompanist.

Ear Training

I have a BA in Music from the University of Washington and 40 years' experience as a piano teacher, accompanist, vocal coach, and music director. My academic work included preparation for high school choral teaching, with voice lessons, vocal pedagogy, music theory, piano, composition, conducting, and participation in high school, college, and community choral groups. I have Kodaly Level 1 certification and 1 year of Waldorf teacher training, which included music.

I have taught singing since childhood, and have organized and taught singing classes and choral ensembles privately, as well as teaching singers for musical theater and directing church choirs. I give thorough music theory and ear training instruction to both my piano students and my singing students.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have WA state teacher certification in English Language Arts (5-12) and Drama (K-12) and one year of Waldorf teacher certification preparation. I have been a private piano teacher for 40 years, working primarily with children between the ages of 6-12 years (K-6.)

I raised 2 children to adulthood, was a 4-H leader, Sunday school teacher, and provided support for countless youthful activities, like Pony Club, dance and drama lessons, puppetry, Girls Scouts, soccer, and Rabbit and Dog 4-H.

I have well-rounded academic competencies and love the company of young children. It would be a pleasure to me to help young students succeed academically and socially.

English

I received WA state teacher certification with endorsements in English Language Arts (5-12) and Drama (K-12) in 2004. Since then, I have worked as a substitute teacher in the Mukilteo and South Whidbey School Districts, gathering teaching experience in a number of different fields.

I have always been interested in the spoken and written word. I wrote plays, songs, and stories in my free time as a child. In adulthood, I have continued to develop my writing skills in several genres, including poetry, essay, op-ed, short story, children's books, memoir, and playwriting.

As a writer, I love learning about and teaching the building blocks of my craft: grammar, sentence structure, paragraph development, style, voice, word choice, etc.

I have also tutored many special needs and ESL students in English Language skills as a volunteer over the years. I have been tutoring a Mexican immigrant one-on-one for the last three years, who can now speak English and read and write elementary Spanish and English. I am currently a volunteer in the Edmonds CC ABE/ESL department, working with non-English speaking immigrants from over 13 different countries.

ESL/ESOL

I have a Post-Bachelor's Certificate in TESOL from Seattle Pacific University/School of Teaching ESL, Seattle, WA - Dec. 2014.

I was a volunteer ESL classroom assistant in the ESL/ABE Dept., Edmonds Community College, Lynnwood, WA - winter, spring, fall quarters, 2013

I have provided private language tutoring:

1) Gave weekly English lessons to illiterate Mexican man for 5 years; he now can speak English fluently and reads and writes in Spanish and English on an elementary level - 2009-14.

2) Designed and taught a Level 1 ESL class for Mexican students at my home - Aug. - Nov., 2014.

Phonics

As a singing teacher and choral director, I pay keen attention to verbal communication in many languages, teaching my students to listen to vowels, consonants, phrasing, accents, etc. and to produce consistent and pure vowel sounds and clear consonants.

I have teacher certification in English Language Arts (5-12), which included a 400 level course in Language Learning that covered phonetics concepts.

I have worked as a volunteer with special needs African American students who spoke Ebonics and with Mexican and Portuguese immigrants to learn English speaking, reading, and writing. I am currently a volunteer in the Edmonds Community College ESL program, assisting in beginning level classes for immigrants speaking over 13 different languages.

Piano

I have a BA in Music from the University of Washington and 40 years' experience as a piano teacher, accompanist, vocal coach, and music director. My academic work included preparation for high school choral teaching, with voice lessons, vocal pedagogy, music theory, piano, composition, conducting, and participation in high school, college, and community choral groups. I have Kodaly Level 1 certification and 1 year of Waldorf teacher training, which included music. I have studied voice privately with a number of voice teachers over the years, with special attention to learning vocal pedagogy for my own teaching.

I have taught singing since childhood, and have organized and taught singing classes and choral ensembles privately, as well as teaching singers for musical theater and directing church choirs. I give thorough music theory and ear training instruction to both my piano students and my singing students.

Piano is my most highly-developed instrument. I am a professional accompanist, church and theater musician, and piano teacher, having taught piano for 40 years to students of all ages.

Sight Singing

Study Skills

I am happy to provide my resume, which documents my academic work and life experience as a teacher, student, and creator. I have been a lifelong learner, having gone back to college every decade since my undergraduate days, and have completed over 8 years of successful college work.

I am a self-directed learner, researching topics, writing articles, and presenting my work in many different venues. I have designed and produced several community forums, including topics as diverse as Afghanistan, the Computer Revolution, and Health Care Reform.

I am well-equipped to help others develop methods, structure and self-discipline for accomplishing their learning goals.

Voice (Music)

My own voice is damaged from allergies, so I am most effective as a vocal coach and piano accompanist, rather than as a professional-calibre singer.
