I have a M.Ed. in Special Education from the University of Washington, endorsed 0-21. I taught at a private school for 9 years and grades k-12. Although most of my students had some kind of special need, I taught the k-6 students all subjects: math (through Algebra 1), English (spelling, grammar and vocabulary are my favorite English aspects to teach), science, social studies, and health. Previous to my work at the private school, I taught at a public preschool -- ages 3-5.

I have taught phonics and beginning reading both as a professional teacher and a volunteer for LAP students professionally for 13 years. My students have included beginning readers, students with dyslexia, and other reading difficulties and ESL students of all ages. I have a bachelor of science degree in speech and hearing sciences. In that program, there was a great deal of emphasis placed on teaching phonics and articulation and applying the concepts to reading and writing. I also have a M.Ed. and in that program, I learned effective methods to teach subjects creatively and effectively focusing on individual student needs.

Customized approach, well-prepared, acutely tuned-in to special needs.

A parent's intuition can sometimes be felt strongly- but mine screamed, 'Yes! Carla is the perfect fit!' Her mindset, skillset and personal experiences are sure to help build the strong foundational support I have been struggling to provide.

Jean, 2 lessons with Carla

Off to a great start!

Carla has met with my son now for 2 sessions to begin weekly tutoring - primarily focused on in writing skills (one of his weak areas and her primary tutoring strength) as well as establishing core study habits, working on organizational systems to help my son with homework assignments, breaking down projects into manageable steps and general Q&A on homework. Carla is very engaging with my son, asking him lots of questions to gather his study habits, areas of interest, challenges and to learn how he learns. She is having him complete a Meyers Briggs personality evaluation as part of him learning more about himself, which I think will be a great start for my son to mature and grow into an amazing student and reach his full potential.

Fun, passionate and very intelligent tutor!!

I am very lucky to have her as my tutor. English is my second language but her tutoring is very easy to understand. Every session is very interesting and challenging. She knows exactly what I need and I am so happy with the progress I made with her.
