About Suzanne

I truly enjoy working with students in the classroom, and working one on one in a tutoring situation is even more exciting, as you can see the comprehension and growth of the student much more quickly. I have worked with many people with a wide range of abilities, from teaching students in our high school's Special Education program, to mentoring business students in FBLA competition, to coaching premier level soccer players. They all have one thing in common, they learn better in a fun and friendly environment, where they are shown patience, respect and understanding.

Many students struggle with the math, but it can be fun with the right approach. Math is a logical puzzle, and given the right tools, math can become a favorite subject, because it makes sense - it is logical. Seeing and seeking relationships between numbers, starting at Pre-algebra and flowing through to Trigonometry, helps your mind be ready to problem solve. We can work together to establish a strong base. It is easy to conquer math.

I have a strong understanding of the sciences, and have many hours engaged in studies of Anatomy, Biology, Nutrition, and Psychology. Working as an entrepreneur, in the schools, and also in a animal shelter has introduced me to even more interesting information regarding Zoology, Sociology, and Ecology. Geology is also an interesting topic that has fascinated me for years.

I was introduced to Public Speaking my sophomore year in high school. I was terrified at first, but our teacher coached us out of our fear, and I have presented to groups from 10 to 1,500 people, and enjoyed doing each presentation. Learning how to present is a key ingredient in leadership and helps with confidence as well.

Reading is a wonderful form of entertainment for all ages, and I have taught reading, and been in "The Next Chapter" book club for 20 years! Writing and vocabulary are also something we can develop and work on.

My first Spanish class was in 7th grade, and I continued my study of Spanish through college. I have worked with students that speak Spanish, helped students with comprehension in the Spanish classes, and worked with ESL students in our school district. I am currently studying French, so I have great empathy and understanding for my students learning a language.

I have a B.A. Degree from the University of Washington in Marketing and International Business. I was an entrepreneur for 22 years, managing a manufacturing business. The business principles I learned in college guided me every day. We used the Microsoft Office products, and they were indispensable to helping make our company a success. They are fun and easy to learn, once you understand the basics of how they work.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 1

Algebra has always been a fun and challenging subject. I enjoy helping students master the skills to truly understand Algebra.

Sewing

Sewing began as a hobby during Middle School, and by High School I was in advanced tailoring. I actually owned, managed, and was the designer of Teazer Hats (Animal Ski Hats) for 22 years! I have designed and sewn ski wear, and many other types of clothing, including costumes, evening wear, and casual outfits.
I am very familiar with many brands of home sewing machines, and I have also used industrial machines as well. I can teach you how to simply sew a straight line, or copy garments and make your own pattern.

Soccer

I have my United States Soccer Federation "National 'C' Coaching License." To achieve this license I had to pass all the prerequisite coaching licenses that require demonstrations of soccer skills, coaching ability, and passing tests that demonstrate you understand soccer at all levels. The "National 'C' License" qualifies me to coach Community College, High School, or any younger age group.
I also have my "Youth Coaching License", and have taught many coaching clinics to prospective Youth Soccer Coaches.
I have 25 years of Coaching experience, ranging from coaching 5 year olds, to coaching Premier High School Soccer players.
I am currently coaching Special Olympics Soccer, and helped establish the program in Stanwood, WA.

Special Needs

I had the privilege of working in a local high school's special education department. I am a certified paraeducator, receiving training in "SECURE", promoting safety in the Special Education environment, and also "The 13 Competencies. I was required to have a full, fingerprinted background check as well.
There were over 25 students with varying levels of disabilities, so my keys to success were patience, understanding, having fun and flexibility. The students had varying levels of disabilities, from 'Angelman's Disease and Down's Syndrome to High Functioning Autism and Asperger's.
I was responsible for teaching students "Life Skills": How to prepare food, clean up, do laundry, keep a checkbook. I also taught and supervised the students in our Dog Bone making business, which involved everything from making the dough, cutting out the dog bone cookies, baking them, packaging the dog cookies, delivering them to customers, and collecting money.
I also assisted in teaching basic reading and math. I took the more able students to Art, P.E., Culinary Skills, and Computer classes, and coached them in those classes. I helped devise many learning games. I helped organize 'EATS Cafe' once a quarter, when our classroom became a breakfast diner, and the students worked in all areas of our café: Waiting tables, cashiering, washing dishes and cooking food.
I also had my first aid and lifeguard certification so I could take a group of students swimming each week.

Track & Field

I ran track in High School in Seattle, running the hurdles and the 800. At the University of Washington I ran the 800 as well. I have ran about a dozen half marathons and at least a dozen Olympic and Sprint Triathlons to help raise money to fight cancer. Teammates always ask me to coach them on their technique, and I have helped many enjoy running even more. The most important thing for track, as with all sports is a PMA - Positive Mental Attitude!
