About Thomas

I am an individual passionate about two things-education and illustration. I believe in hard work for success and dedication to achieve your personal goals. I will provide as much effort as you present to me and then push more. Most accomplishments in life must be acquired through perseverance. Never give up, but I will always teach and not preach.

I believe Mathematics is a language all in itself. Much like illustration, the fundamentals must be taught and understood in order to proceed forward. Without a strong foundation, the rest of the structure will crumble. The background of my mathematical education started at a young age,so when I first graduated from high school in 1991, I initially started a curriculum in electrical engineering with DeVry Institute of Technology in Phoenix. I continued to study electrical engineering when I had to move back to El Paso, TX. When I had enough college credit under my belt, I spent some time as a substitute teacher for the Socorro Independent School District. Unfortunately, I did not initially finish my college degree, however I used my mathematical background by entering the US Navy as a nuclear-trained electronics technician.

I excelled in A-School and Power School, and quickly put myself in positions of leadership at my nuclear power propulsion training unit and when I moved to Washington to report to my first seafaring command, the USS Carl Vinson. Fourteen years of military service gave me opportunities to work as an instructor in my field of study and as a training coordinator writing and orchestrating short- and long-term training curriculums. When I was honorably discharged from the military, I decided to return to college to work on a degree that follows my passion for illustration, but still incorporates my substantial knowledge for engineering and mathematics. Industrial Design was the perfect fit. For my last two years at the Art Institute, I have served as a tutor for the school as well. I aide the school by monitoring the tutoring lab, proctoring make-up exams, and tutoring subjects that include: Geometry, Algebra, Trigonometry, Calculus, Mechnical Drafting, Illustration, Sketching, Model Making, Rhinoceros (CAD software), Solidworks (CAD software), Intermediate level for Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign, Physics, Electronics I & II, among a few other more specific courses.

I can give you a diverse amount of information and make correlations between art, mathematics, science, engineering, and literature that might present a new way of thinking for you. My background is electrical engineering and I am currently enrolled to finish my degree in Industrial Design. I plan to enroll in a Master's program for Illustration and I also have only one class left to finish a Bachelor's program in Nuclear Engineering.

I worked professionally in an engineering field while in the military and helped my peers learn and grow with my ability to teach at an adult level as well. I have plans to teach when I finish my Industrial Design degree in June 2016. I am currently maintaining a 3.80 GPA while being the father of three children, continuing a full-time courseload, and holding a job as a tutor and freelance artist. I also frequently stay connected with industry professionals on LinkedIn to maintain relevent knowledge with our growing industries and technology. If you would like a tutor that not only believes in education of subject matter, but mentorship as well, I am your man. I hope to help grow our futures.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Algebra 2

Engineering background, excelled in mathematics and can teach it in multiple ways.

Calculus

I have an extensive background in mathematics due to the 14 years of military service in which I worked in engineering. My educational background entails both industrial design and electrical engineering. I basically love math and see it as a language all in itself.

Drawing

I am a freelance illustrator by trade. Through passion I was self-taught and now I have been professionally educated within the last two years to change my direction in life from engineering to design.

Elementary Math

My background lies in electrical engineering and industrial design, but mathematics is my bread and butter. I can teach you everything you would like to know about math, and then some. I believe math is a language all in itself, and would love to make you less afraid of it, if you are.

Physics

Mathematics and mathematical based sciences are my forte. I am one class away (my capstone) from finishing my nuclear engineering degree; however, I am currently starting a masters program for illustration online in the fall, so I had to put my engineering degree on the back burner for the time being. Just let me know what you goals are with physics and a little more understanding of current level of knowledge. I look forward to working with you.

Study Skills

Before joining the military, I worked as a substitute teacher for the Socorro Independent School District in El Paso, Texas. Promoting learning and proper study techniques were at the forefront of my services to the children that I helped teach at a middle school and high school level. While in the military for 14 years, I helped establish continued training programs for my fellow, junior, and senior sailors. I tutored many of my shipmates in college courses they were enrolled in, and served at a training command for my rate for 4 years of my obligated service.
