Tutored for Olympic College. Started with Organic Chemistry and expanded to include Algebra through Calculus and most of the sciences. I was well liked by most of my students and was asked by them to help with other subjects (such as English or Music) that I had to decline.
Mostly my working premise is that the student can learn the material. It is up to me to find a way of presentation that works with the student's background. I use the Socratic method a lot, asking the student questions and building on the response.
I did some Skin diving from 1966 to 1975, and back packing from 1969 to 1975, mostly in the Olympics. I've also done some sailing, both cruising and racing. I managed to place in top three a few time in the local races. I have taught others how to sail. I have some photography experience, including some amateur Astronomy photos of the Hale-Bop comet and other sky features.
I am located in Bremerton. So, working with students in King county would be too expensive in travel time and cost. Sorry. Tutored for Olympic College. My son told me he really liked Michael for his kind and patient approach to helping him understand. He has seen many tutors and this is the first one he asked to see on a regular basis.
Extremely helpful. Several calculus concepts (chain rule, related rates, differentiating trig functions) were eluding me. He has a huge math background and explains it well to us muggles. Wouldn't want anyone else.
Michael was able to explain and clarify functions and problems related to my Pre-Calculus class. I feel confident that I will do good on my exam due to his help and understanding. Thank you Michael!
This is my daughter's second lesson with Michael. She says he is super effective and she's so happy we found him. We will be scheduling more lessons with Michael soon .
He helped with me the questions that I had hard time. He was patient and explained the materials in depth. He was helpful. If u r looking for a math Tutor who is patient with good examples,heI get be the one for u.
Michael went over a whole chapter and helped my student feel more confident about the math material. She got a 90 on quiz next day. Thank you!
My granddaughter enjoys her one on one lessons. Math is not her favorite subject but she tells me that Mr Michael helps to make it a little easier to understand after each session.
Michael has been a patient and helpful chemistry tutor to my 10th grade son. He is also flexible which is helpful when you don't always know the exact needs week to week. We recommend him.
Covered the binomial distribution and Poisson distribution. Michael was very knowledgable and helped me to gain a little better understanding of each concept.
Michael helped my daughter with algebra. She appreciated how he explained different concepts using real world examples so she could associate the math problems with something more personal.
We chose Mr. Michael for help with our son's (Junior in High School) Chemistry class. Michael was friendly and knowledgeable. He took the time to explain things very thoroughly. We are very impressed and plan to utilize his services for Math as well!
My son was struggling with geometry. Having missed the first two weeks of class, he just couldn't get caught up. Two sessions with Michael and his attitude about this subject has gone from gloom and near hopelessness to positive, hopeful and even excited. What a change in just a few days. And Michael is a pleasure to work with. Our first experience with a tutor and we couldn't be more pleased. As a father I would highly recommend Michael and my son agrees.
He has been very helpful in both statistics and chemistry. He even followed up after the lesson with additional information on a data source problem.
Michael has been a brilliant tutor this quarter. Physics has been a very tough subject for me to comprehend. With Michael’s vast knowledge of the physics discipline, he has greatly helped to enhance my knowledge so that I can do well on my finals. I would highly recommend Michael. His patience and thoughtful nature has helped guide my understanding of this subject. This has been an extremely positive experience. I’m very grateful I found Michael! Thank you.
He really seems genuinely interested in the welfare of my niece and her progress in school. It is a relief to know that I'm not alone in trying to provide her a quality education. It's very comforting whenever I hear her able to answer his questions due to his ability to word them in a way she can comprehend.
Michael has been working with our daughter for several weeks now. She is in middle school and started struggling with Geometry. We are pleased with his ease of teaching her and the patience he shows in his tutoring. We are very happy with Michael.
Thank you, Michael, for the time spent. We look forward to MANY more hours!
My son has had three lessons with Michael K. He is very easy for my son to follow when he is teaching him. He is very patient. Gets five stars from our family. Thank you.
Thanks again for going over and over and over the same process. I never thought I would say this but, I'm doing calculus now. WOW!
Michael's been able to bounce between both science and math - utilizing the hour in the best way for the weekly workload. We're very grateful for Michael's contribution to Sophomore year!
I have put off fulfilling my math requirement to get my degree for four years. I am down to the count now. I am not comfortable with nor do I enjoy mathematics. I was skeptical of ever hiring a tutor. Michael was exactly what I was looking for. He was patient and made the experience enjoyable. I look forward to our next session and to figuring out these math lessons that have had me in a frenzy for some time now.
I was struggling with calculus this quarter. It was extremely difficult for me. I've been an A math student all my life, but I just could not wrap my head around derivatives, and that is dangerous because calculus is all about derivatives and its evil sister companion, integrals.
I was able to email Michael with what I was struggling with, so he had an idea what help I needed. I also outlined my goals, which were important to me, though, the expectations were just a 2.0 to fulfill my requirement for college.
With Michael's patience, the prof told me today I earned a 2.7. Not too bad, considering when I met with Michael I was at a 2.0 and in danger of falling further, because the math was getting more difficult.
Basically, Michael taught me a few concepts that I had just not clicked with, and some light bulbs went off...one at a time over the lessons, and I got better and better at calculus during the last 3 weeks.
I had a 10 week class and at the 7 week mark I was at the 2.0. I'd say going to a 2.7 in 3 weeks is pretty fantastic, wouldn't you?
I'd also like to add that Michael got back with me very quickly by email, and he was always on time to the lesson. The only time I waited for him was when I showed up 20 minutes early to enjoy a tasty drink at Starbucks. He was still 5 minutes early.
I'd like to publicly thank Michael. He really knows his stuff.
One more thing, I was taking a business calculus class, and there were new concepts that Michael had not seen before, and I knew that they might be new to him. I explained them to him as best as I could, then showed him an example in my textbook. Within 60 seconds of my explanation and a look at the textbook, Michael was able to decipher completely what was going on. It took me 20 or 30 minutes on my own to grasp a small concept and 6 hours of homework per night. I got it down to 3 hours per night with his help. For an example, the brilliant kids in the class took 90 minutes.
I wish I had hired Michael at week 2 or 3, but c'est la vie.
I have been working with Mike on various Math subjects that will be covered on the WEST E exam. He has a very fluid mind and is capable of switching gears to diversify and teach different math subjects and to see the inter-relatedness of math concepts. He is the ideal tutor for me, being very patient, adaptable and capable of understanding and explaining various types of math problems. I also enjoy our time working together and feel that our time is well spent. I highly recommend him as a tutor, and feel lucky to have his help.
In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.
Have been tutoring math, mostly algebra, since 1994. First with Olympic College and then after a 10 year break with WyzAnt. Helped a math teacher pass the WEST E exam for math teachers in the State of Washington.
Have tutored introductory organic and general chemistry for Olympic College from 1994 to 2000. Was the go to guy for getting students in Nursing school through organic chemistry. Also sought out by students having problems with introductory general chemistry.
Have been tutored physics, often for Olympic College after 1994 and some with WyzAnt.
