About Jesse

Jesse is a jazz guitarist and vocal jazz accompanist who lives in Seattle, WA. He graduated from the University of Southern California with Cum Laude Honors in 2015.

Early on, he was exposed to jazz music when he saw Bruce Forman play at Jazz at Port Townsend about a month after picking the guitar up. After that moment, he has worked hard to become the player he is today. One who deeply is rooted in the tradition of swing and repertoire from the Great American Songbook. He credits the older musicians he played with in his high school days in the Seattle area like Reuel Lubag and Diana Page for fostering his love for jazz and swinging sound.

Jesse's main specialty is in vocal accompaniment. At USC, he not only studied with vocalist Kathleen Grace to become a better accompanist, but he also took voice lessons with her to see what it's like to be singer. Jesse soon become the top musician on campus to be called for any vocal jazz accompaniment gigs and he hopes to do the same in the city of Seattle. He absolutely loves playing with singers! He also had the privilege of studying with Bruce Forman, Kathleen Grace, Bob Mintzer, Frank Potenza, Richard Smith, Pat Kelly, Adam Del Monte, Sara Gazarek, Aaron Serfaty and Edwin Livingston. Jesse plays Epiphone Guitars and La Bella Strings.

As a teacher and educator, Jesse spent a lot of time tutoring his peers at USC on applied jazz harmony to the guitar. He also spent time teaching beginning students in high school and college. His main concern with teaching is doing what he can to help students reach their goals by tailoring lesson plans to students' learning styles.

I am a very patient teacher and I pride myself in being able to explain one concept in different ways so that a student can fully understand that concept. I have a lot of passion in sharing the gift music, something that has played an extremely positive impact in my life!

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

Composition (Music)

I have a firm grasp on harmony and how it applies to the composition of a song. I took one year of classical music theory as well as one year of jazz theory at The University of Southern California. I have a repertoire of 35 original compositions. I also spend time as an arranger for rhythm section on some of my gigs as an accompanist.

Guitar

I have been playing guitar for nine years and teaching guitar for seven years. I'm currently a working musician in the Seattle area playing performances every week. I'm an accompanist at Cornish College of the Arts for the vocal jazz department. I also received my bachelors degree in music.
