About Gabrielle

Hello, I am an English tutor with a specialization in Advanced Writing Skills.

My goal is to make sure you read and write at college level for three reasons: 1) to get you into the best possible college, because where you go to school matters 2) to bring your critical thinking skills up to par with the expectations of freshman composition courses at the university or college level 3) to send you off to college with the study skills and a sense of how to organize your reading and writing to make sure you can easily read across the entire curriculum. Every subject you take requires English competency. Hence, improving your ability to read complex texts and becoming an articulate writer is primary. It will ensure your success once you get to college. This moment in time is an investment in yourself that will pay dividends again and again, improving your ability to assess, to compare, to contrast and to make good decisions.

I am very interested in where you are as a human being in the learning process. In other words, I don't look at learning as a thing to be stuffed with, another product to ingest. I see learning as an exchange between peers with different life experiences. In this exchange, what you bring to the table is relevant. Recent advances in Composition Studies have shown that reading does not happen in a vacuum. Reading is a skill that draws on your previous knowledge as well as your ability to infer, to deduce and to extrapolate. I look forward to meeting you and working with you to take your critical thinking skills to the next level. Please call me to get started on a plan of action with the innate potential to improve your quality of life, not just your learning outcomes and your career options.

I am also available to support adults who have not been in school for many years. Get your feet wet before you take the plunge. I have been teaching adult education since 2002: in community colleges and technical schools. As a meditation instructor as well, I place great emphasis on awareness and presence.

For ESL students, I can offer support based on my own experience of living in a foreign country without understanding the language. At the age of ten, I moved from the United States to my mother's homeland to live in Rorschach, Switzerland. That was the beginning of a nine-year foray into studying French and German. My approach to grammar and to learning in general is to stick as closely as possible to how children learn language naturally with or without teachers. I believe learning is work, but that doesn't mean it has to be a struggle. Fun, a sense of being relaxed, and humor are also important elements that contribute to success in learning.

The emphasis of my education has been in Creative Writing, the craft aspects of fiction, and in teaching Rhetoric and Composition. If your need is academic writing, once you understand the elements of creating a solid argument, you can write any kind of essay the standardized tests require. You will also be equally well adept at writing a research paper.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ACT English

I have been working as a tutor using old ACT English drills almost daily. I go over them with several students each week and am required to do them myself in order to teach test preparation. I am also knowledgeable about test-taking-strategies specific to the ACT exam.

I have been working primarily as an ACT exam preparation tutor in English and Reading with students at Huntington Learning Center. I have a Masters Degree in Writing. I also have taken the GRE exam with high scores in writing.
