About Nadine

I am a teacher with more than 15 years experience teaching students in grades 4 through 10. I am also a mother of two and have helped my children do their best in school. I have a master's degree in education and have taken many continuing education courses in all aspects of teaching and learning. I have worked with students with special needs including ADHD and Asperger's.

I am an expert reading and writing teacher and will use tried-and-true methods to help students to improve in these areas and move towards success in school and life. I love all areas of social studies and will help students who struggle to make sense of these classes in school. If your child needs help with any subject in elementary school (including math and science), I am happy to work with him or her and know you will be satisfied with the results.

I am happy and able to work with adults with various areas of deficiency, such as public speaking, using software, test preparation, or any kind of reading or writing. I have taken classes in teaching adults to read as well as reading instruction for children ages 5-18.

Test anxiety is a problem for many people. I believe the best strategy to counteract test anxiety is to be as prepared as possible. If students need test preparation. I am flexible and will work with you to make our tutoring sessions as successful and productive as possible.

Approved subjects are in bold.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

ADD/ADHD

I have taught in public school for many years and have encountered students with a diagnosis for ADD or ADHD numerous times. I am familiar with these kinds of students and their strengths, learning styles, and special needs. I currently am the learning coach for a child with ADHD. I have experience with children who are medicated or unmedicated for these conditions.

Aspergers

I have worked with students with Asperger's Syndrome in the classroom and one-on-one as a behavior therapist and academic tutor. I am very familiar with behaviors, needs, and characteristics of children and young people with Asperger's. I believe I can help a person with any academic concern or beyond that with behavior modification or life skills assistance if necessary. I approach each student with an open mind, respect, and patience.

Autism

I have worked with students with Autism Spectrum Disorder in large groups (mainstreamed into a regular classroom) and one-on-one. Since taking on the education of children and young people with this disorder, I have made a study of the characteristics of ASD, and the best practices to teach these students. I recognize that these students may be sensitive to many stimuli and react to them in unexpected ways. If given an assignment to work with an individual with ASD, I would approach him/her with an open mind and a positive attitude tempered by much patience. I know the needs and characteristics of this population. I am willing and able to provide behavior therapy, lifeskills lessons, or academic support for students with ASD.

Elementary (K-6th)

I have taken courses in reading instruction for grades kindergarten through 12. I have two children of my own that I have worked with throughout their school careers and have a great understanding of what is required for success in elementary school. I am certified to teach grades 4-8. I can help your student with any challenges they are experiencing in elementary school.

Elementary Math

I have tutored elementary-aged children with math. I am a great believer in using music and games to learn the basics. If a child does not know the multiplication facts, math will always be challenging, but once this obstacle is tackled, higher level math can be grasped with less effort. I am willing to help a child with the math problems he or she is struggling with right now and to be of assistance with any other issues that need help in the area of math or any elementary subject.

English

I used to be a secretary to a real estate attorney/executive and a primary responsibility was composing correspondence and editing contracts. I took classes in business writing. I have taught high school English in public and private schools. I am an expert writer, researcher, and also expert in literary analysis. I also am aware of resources a student might use to be successful in high school or post high school English.

Microsoft Excel

I have been using Microsoft Excel since the 1990s. I received formal training when I worked in a corporate setting, and as a teacher I loved to use Excel to set up rosters for my students and to track their work. I can help you to create very useful spreadsheets, I know how to manipulate the data, and I am great at formatting the spreadsheet and creating printouts that are useful, attractive, and professional. Let me know if you would like me to help you with your Excel needs, especially if you are just getting started on this program.

Microsoft PowerPoint

I have spent many years using this program as a teacher. Prior to that time, I worked in an office setting where I received formal training on the use of this and all Microsoft Office products. I know how to put together effective, professional presentations.

Microsoft Word

I have been using Microsoft Word since the 1990s, when I was formally trained by a corporation. I have created a variety of documents on this program including contracts, graduate-level theses, letters and resumes, and all kinds of worksheets and tests as a teacher. I consider myself a "Picasso" of Microsoft Word. I have a lot of experience in helping others with their word processing problems and goals. If you would like to improve your skills on Microsoft Word, I am happy to be of assistance.

Prealgebra

As a child I was not very confident in the area of math. Later as an adult I obtained a job working with CPAs and math became my full-time job. I attribute this opportunity to my confidence with math today. I have taught math in a regular 6th grade classroom as well as a Title I class, where students struggled with the most basic concepts. So much of the math students do today in elementary school and middle school is "prealgebra". I am quite skillful in this area myself and will be happy to assist any young person who may need one-on-one support to finally grasp algebraic concepts presented in classrooms. Once a child understands the foundations of prealgebra, he or she will have the knowledge and confidence to continue on to higher-level math in middle school, high school, and college.

Reading

I have taken classes in reading instruction for grades k-12. I have experience in reading instruction for grades 6-10. I am an excellent teacher for students who struggle with these skills. I can help a student to improve his scores on standardized tests.

Social Studies

Social Studies is an umbrella term used to describe lessons in elementary and middle school on the subjects of geography, history, map reading, and world cultures. For the most part though, this subject is a reading class replete with an abundance of vocabulary words. Additionally, students learn to read and use graphic information found in charts, graphs, and maps. Social Studies was always my favorite subject when I was a child. I also enjoyed teaching it in the classroom. I am certified in two states to teach Social Studies from grades 4-9. Not only do I consider myself an expert in the subject, I am also an expert reading teacher and can assist students to get the most out of their Social Studies reading material.

Study Skills

As a teacher, I have researched study skills and taught young people the basics. As a result of my research, I determined that students don't really know what "studying" really means. I teach students to consider their individual learning styles and other strengths when they approach their studies. I have a questionnaire to use that is appropriate to all ages. I am happy to give instruction in study skills in conjunction with support in other academic areas.

Writing

Teaching the craft of writing has long been one of my favorite aspects of being an English teacher. I have written quite a few research papers for my graduate degree as well. I am sure that I can help you if writing is something you would like to get better at. I can also help your child if he or she needs to improve in writing. I am able to help elementary, middle, or high school students as well as college students improve writing skills.
