About Thomas

“Education is all a matter of building bridges.” - Ralph Ellison

For thirty-three years I worked to build bridges as a teacher, through deep listening, compassion, patience and creativity. I thrived teaching students who often consider themselves no longer open to learning. I have connected with students dealing with bullying, specific learning disabilities, emotional/behavioral disorders, autism, and placement in a juvenile corrections facility. I also taught GED and ESL students in an adult corrections facility. I have a Masters Degree in Special Education and have worked in a wide variety of educational settings. I am currently teaching in a K-12 college preparatory charter school working with middle school students using the online program Edgenuity.

I have developed a holistic approach to teaching, by incorporating guided imagery and affirmations which help students gain more focus and confidence as learners as well as an inner sense of calmness during testing. I call it "Yoga of Learning."

I especially love to teach reading, because it allows me to reintroduce students to a part of themselves that naturally loves stories. I utilize whole language and read aloud approaches. I also employ centering exercises to assist students in opening up to their own innate learning abilities. From this foundation of openness the students and I explore a natural way of improving reading skills and developing a true love of reading.

My background includes years of practicing yoga and meditation. I am also certified as a Chopra PSM Meditation and Perfect Health Instructor, and have training in hypnotherapy, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) and the emotional freedom technique (EFT).

My approach to helping students expand their reading skills is simple: we read great stories aloud together, talk about what are reading, and take the time to learn words that are unfamiliar. I have a passion for keeping this process straightforward because it helps students feel comfortable and open to learning. My students learn how to regularly ask themselves the question: What is going on in the text I am reading?

I help my students connect with history by reading historical novels with them. The characters in these novels transport students to different places and time periods effortlessly.

I am especially qualified to tutor students with reading challenges because I have training in reading assessment to determine each student's instructional reading level as well as training in whole language, guided reading and read aloud techniques.

I look forward to working with students who are seeking a holistic approach to learning. Please contact me so we can begin accessing your innate capacity to improve your skills in Reading, American History, Geography, and Government.

Approved subjects

In most cases, tutors gain approval in a subject by passing a proficiency exam. For some subject areas, like music and art, tutors submit written requests to demonstrate their proficiency to potential students. If a tutor is interested but not yet approved in a subject, the subject will appear in non-bold font. Tutors need to be approved in a subject prior to beginning lessons.

American History

I have been licensed to teach Social Studies including American History in Minnesota since 1983. In addition, I obtained my California credential for teaching American History in 2015.

Over a thirty-year teaching career I have taught American History to both seventh and eleventh graders. My secret to making American History accessible to my students is using historical fiction novels whenever possible. These novels take students on a journey that allows them to understand critical events from our nation's history.

Dyslexia

I have a Master's Degree in Special Education from the University of North Dakota earned in 2007. My area of emphasis for this degree was Specific Learning Disabilities. This means I have been trained to help students with federally recognized learning disorders including Dyscalculia, Dysgraphia, Dyslexia, Language Processing Disorder, Non-Verbal Learning Disabilities, and Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit. I worked as a special education teacher in Minnesota with this degree between 2007 and 2013.

GED

I am licensed by the states of Minnesota and California teacher in Social Studies (7-12) and Special Education Learning Disabilities (K-12). In addition, I taught Adult Education GED classes in Minnesota from 1986 to 1993. My special education skills enable me to help students working toward completing the GED tests who may struggle in the areas of reading, writing and math.

Patient and prepared

My son is fairly disenchanted with school and easily frustrated. But he connected with Thomas right away and looks forward to every tutoring session. Thomas has taken the time to learn about my son and understand just exactly what motivates him. He's done his research and gets my son excited about learning. Thomas is wonderful.
