Bio

I have over 7 years of tutoring experience and I love helping people learn. I work to create a learning environment where students feel empowered to ask questions, more confident in their ability to learn new things, and calmer in the pressure of a test-taking environment. I once felt intimidated by science, and I can thank my high school biology teacher for turning that intimidation into excitement. I hope I can do the same for other students!

I recently graduated from Wesleyan University with a double major in Molecular Biology/Biochemistry and Art. I think there is enormous untapped value in the bridge between science and art: to translate science, or any other complex discipline, into verbal and visual language that is digestible and compelling for anyone. I enjoyed working as an Introductory Biology and Organic Chemistry peer tutor and Biochemistry teaching assistant at Wesleyan because of the challenge of explaining concepts in various ways until my students understand them fully. I believe that complex scientific concepts can be understood by people with any level of scientific education, if those concepts are explained properly.

I have a degree in Molecular Biology and Biochemistry, and have worked as a tutor at Wesleyan for Introductory Biology and Organic Chemistry I and II. I was the teaching assistant for Biochemistry, which involved facilitating weekly group problem sets, holding office hours where people could get homework help, and running exam review sessions. Before college, I was a Reading and Math tutor for the elementary and middle school level.

I took the SAT in 2015 and scored a 2400, and also took three subject tests: Biology (780), Literature (750) and Math II (720). I prepared myself for the Biology SAT Subject test and still have my notes and flashcards, so I know how to study smart and what kind of questions are likely to be on the test.

Patient & Explains Things Thoroughly

Ella was great! I really enjoyed working with her! She is very patient and knows how to accurately and precisely explain topics. She was extremely helpful and made me feel so much more confident with the material. She gave very insightful knowledge on how the exams may ask a question and also responded to my messages in a very timely fashion. I look forward to working with her again and recommend her to any other student looking for a great tutor!

Amazing Biochem Tutor!

I hired Ella to help me with a my biochem course this spring. My prof was absolutely no help at all, but Ella really saved not only my grades, but my sanity as well. She's super nice a patient and really helped to break down complex topics and help me apply them to the overall bigger picture of each unit. Ella was also super flexible and could always work around my busy college schedule. I recommend her to anyone looking for an amazing tutor!

Ella was very knowledgable, kind and quick to respond. She was flexible in scheduling sessions. I think what was most helpful were Ella's diagrams that she drew, which very detailed.

Ella taught me many concepts throughout the entire semester including glycolysis, fatty acid metabolism, nitrogen metabolism and more. Her diagrams were visually helpful and she even referenced my professor's PowerPoint slides. Ella would point out how topics would be asked on an exam. Overall, she taught me how to look at the big picture and see how the various topics I was learning connected to each other. With Ella's help, I was able to get a great grade in biochemistry and learn so much!

Explanations were very detailed and clear!

Ella was able to help me fully understand concepts that were not explained well in class. She was very thorough and the lecture didn’t feel rushed. She made sure I understood the processes we went over by employing visual aids and drawings which I thought were very helpful as a visual learner! Overall satisfied with my lesson!
